The Truth Behind Uncapped

I agree about transparency and we are probably more frustrated than you are. Let me apologise on behalf of everyone at WA and I.S.

Some of the sales/managers at I.S are very confused internally about the specs on paper versus the actual product in reality.

We had about 10 ads ready to go that we cancelled because we have been trying to get clarity on what it is we selling exactly.

I've have bought it to their attention, and had a long chat to someone high up in I.S last night and got some clarity finally:

+ 2 concurrent connections is currently *technically* possible but it used to ease authentication for a single user and should NOT be used in a "two user" environment. This changedto be 1 connection this morning.

+ Shaped during the day, especially P2P while after hours is not. (We were initially told it was unshaped)

Another thing it's been rumoured that some ISP's are in fact exploiting this by selling the SAME USERNAME and password to two clients hence making 50% profit. I'm not sure if it's true though.

We are updating our website to reflect this info as well as sending out a notice to clients.

Cheers

It would appear that you enjoy paying exubarant prices for things Necuno. I suppose you drive a BMW and quite happy that you got ripped off in the process, as now it appears that you have loads of money and you can feel good about yourself.

I think you are missing the point slightly, it is not always about the size of your bank balance, but more often about something called value for money, which ADSL in SA is not.

if you work for you salary you have the right to spent it how you see fit. Were are you currently in life is your own doing - you determine your place.

and no i don't drive a bmw. its a common car btw - just take a look around to see how many 'able' drivers drive that...

anyways no point in driving a godlike car in RSA our roads don't merit it - point.

there is anyways very little value for money for most and some services in rsa - because most people who runs it or some of them cares about how to debit you monthly very promptly but falls short when it becomes their expense and time to sort something out.

on another issue
not all isps are created equal but the do their best not to fall short with what they get from telzilla they and the goverment are in the end who determin what we get and what we pay.

obviously R1368 512k uncapped from ods is expensive but they also have to make some money in the end to keep their doors open - which won't change until the money cow gives them cheaper products which in turn will give us cheaper options.
...

in the end if you get R100 p/m and you can afford that R60 waffle it is your right to enjoy it as its your efforts that gave you the R100 in the first place - if you only get R40 p/m and can't get the R60 waffle then either live with that and stay where you are or do something that you also get R100 p/m to get that R60 waffle. this is how it is either live with it or don't.

nothing falls for free in your lap. you earn it.

I have to agree with you, however it does not mean to say we have to accept the status quo, and because of it be forced to seek better employment to afford something which is way over priced. There is no sense in such complacency.

Well OpenWeb's 1024k uncapped special for MyADSL is coming to a halt end of May :(

Paying R2500 for this service now is a too much for its worth, especially with the stupid 10day 60Gb traffic window most ISPs are implementing now... will probably try the 512 service on my 4Mb line first to see how it behaves.

I know, I am so so sad, my life is so over. Openweb please have mercy on us!

Hey Friends

We are currently trying to get clarity on the 10 day rolling window, as it appears some ISP's have this in their agreements.

If this is how the Uncapped Express accounts will start working, we will inform our clients asap.

We thank you for your patience.

Kind regards
MrBEEP

i get the feeling that the adsl 'pipe' is () and we are currently at (.........) - to many users in the adsl rsa tree with a telzilla vicegrip set the o and now we have all these silly cap, rollover and other rules for pocket squisher.

hence also the increasing pings, disconnections and end-of-mond-end-of-world scenario.

So with the rolling window one is allowed a most of 6/3 (for 1024/512) Gb a day (if you want to be able to download the most out of everyday)... so every month you will only have a maximum of 180Gb?

WebAfrica is very misleading in their ads for this service (http://www.webafrica.co.za/news/Is_Uncapped_ADSL_Express.html) Suggest they change their wording on their websites to NOT say "24/7 uncapped, unlimited bandwidth" and also "We believe this service will satisfy an area of demand in the dsl uncapped market that has long existed, balancing effective costing with the fantastic feature of genuine unlimited bandwidth."

R1200 for an uncapped account. And still its shaped during the day. Wow, we get ripped off so badly in SA.

One Question : if you have rollover windows periods and Threshhold, can you still claim to be uncapped ?
I simply ask since you are now limited/ capped, merely at a higher amount, hit a threshhold you are throttled, exceed the rollover period window and you are continually throttled, point beinf you are punished if you exceed a set amount , is that not a cap ?

This product offers true 24/7 uncapped, unlimited bandwidth at a fixed low-cost monthly fee. Ideal for p2p, VPN connectivity and general 'power users' in both business or home environments.

Geez, keep your hair on! It appears to be uncapped, and to allow unlimited downloads, within the speed limits. A local ISP could never offer uncapped at unlimited speeds at anything like the price. If you don't like the speed limit pay a couple of hundred ront more and get a normal IS uncapped account. The way I read it there is no misrepresentation.

huh? You ARE paying for a normal IS uncapped account. But with a threshold on it per day? That is not uncapped. Not in any dictionary.

As for full uncapped, yes, I have that at the moment with OpenWeb, my last few days with true uncapped broadband (the MyADSL special) because these accounts get terminated end of this month.

I would like WebAfrica to explain their wording on the threshold.

From INX (http://www.inx.co.za/adsluncapisis.php?page_id=36) the wording is as follows -
"
The thresholds are as follows:

512 = 30 Gig for 30 days which is divided in 3 segments of 10 Gig each. The usage is monitored over a 10 day rolling window period.
1024 = 60 Gig for 30 days which is divided in 3 segments of 20 Gig each. The usage is monitored over a 10 day rolling window period.
"
Soooo... is the thresholds on the "uncapped" accounts now 60Gb for THE WHOLE MONTH or 60Gb per 10 days?

Anyone else? On the one hand I cant believe that way we are being ripped for services here, on the other hand I can understand that people are making a killing and dont want anything to change anytime soon

Something really needs to be done regarding this Uncapped issue, and the fact that these uncapped accounts are mostly only good for p2p (ever so slowly), but when it comes to browsing you have to refresh 5 times to get a page to load correctly!. Even local websites are just too slow nowerdays.

At the end of the day, its the better offer to take if you want unlimited, but getting shaped so badly that you can't enjoy the internet is really pathetic.

I've been trying to send an email to openweb... sent the 4kb message this morning, and its still sitting in my outbox. Why?, because i can't seem to connect with any of the webmail or Gmail smtp servers - What a joke!.

*sigh*

The thresholds are as follows:

512 = 30 Gig for 30 days which is divided in 3 segments of 10 Gig each. The usage is monitored over a 10 day rolling window period.
1024 = 60 Gig for 30 days which is divided in 3 segments of 20 Gig each. The usage is monitored over a 10 day rolling window period.

Any ISP's should not refer to anything that's limited in any way as Uncapped!. Time to complain to the ASA!

Is there any SAIX uncapped accounts available? Or are they the router only options at the moment?

That would be the one to get, regardless of "threshold". Been trying all night to download from Rapidshare (Premium) but half of the time getright just sits there waiting (IS uncapped). With my SAIX capped :( account everything downloads at once. But ofcourse I would get capped in 2 hours ...

I have similar problems with Rapidshare on "Uncapped". I often have to use WebAfrica prepaid (SAIX) to get to the download server page (Premium acount). Then I switch back to IS, hit the links and they download fine.
