the Wine (Windows under Linux) thread

I have never really been a fan of WINE because it runs very few apps... I'll wait two or three years until improved support... Until then I'm using windows

What is a very few amount: 100, 1000? Because Wine have 2268 Platinum applications that is software that runs flawlessly. If you include gold your looking at 4278 applications that is is 2010 applications that runs flawlessly with configuration. This doesn't even include silver applications. and just for interest sake the appdb have 7968 applications in the database.

Regards,

I have been using WINE for some time on Ubuntu 8.10 and it couldn't run any application I tried it with. Thinking it was junk software, I uninstalled it and never tried it again. I am currently on Kubuntu 9.04 but I am wary to destabilize my computer by installing this programme again. Now it seems some people actually use WINE successfully. I don't understand, if I install it, why does some Windows programmes not work?

What windows programmes have you tried?

I can run games in wine if 1 needs help with Trackmania. In Ubuntu 9.04.

Has anybody had issues installing Office 2007 on Wine? I can open the installer, but as soon as it starts copying the files it stops and says "An error has occurred..." and then I have to close it.

According to AppDB, it should work fine. Anybody experience something similar?

Nope no problems in my wine in Mandriva

Got Call of Duty 4 MW1 single player running well in WINE last night :D woohoo! haven't tried multiplayer yet but also didn't install Punkbuster because I recall there being issues with that in a much older WINE release.

Got CS2 and Word running. I tried Falcon 4 but frame refresh was about 1 frame a second! Any tips? Has anyone tried MS Flight Sim 9/2004?

I've been looking for s/w to annotate PDFs and found it rather difficult to find any. PDFedit is pretty useless; Xournal converts the document to an image, then you draw on the image; Okular doesn't save the changes in a PDF; etc...

Then I found that someone recommended Foxit PDF Editor under Wine, but that crashed my system when I clicked on the menus (it's also just as unintuitive as PDFedit). Another recommendation was PDF-Xchange Viewer under Wine and that works stunningly well - you don't even realise it's a doze app. Even the eye-candy in the toolbars works.

I like Linux, interesting stuff, but I always have to many hassles with wine.

With playonlinux, wine-doors I cant just install any app (if not listed in the two latter) under linux and that sux
and that is sad since it allows to have different versions of wine installed at the same time but can`t use it because of above as stated in brackets...

Installed the latest wine and there are some many apps where I just get the windows and title blocks
without the text, examples are cheatbook database, esword, internet explorer.
Other issues an old game like Delta force black hawk down no go, tomb raider legend plays with stuttering
audio and broken visuals (see patch lines all over) etc.

Sometimes its a simple change that solves the problem - I've seen this before for some 'can't-remember-the-name-right-now' app. Change the OS that the app runs under.

To be honest, I found that in older WINE versions, Windows2003 was the OS that worked the best. But that's my own opinion :)

CrossOver is your best bet. it worked well for me- the paid version offcourse

EasyBridge works really well, and gives you a reasonably good game. It looks dated, but I think a beginner can be up the basics of bidding and playing bridge pretty nicely.

I've just found that the games I mentioned earlier in this thread don't work under wine 1.2 (version 1.1.42 in the repositories), which was installed when i upgraded to Kubuntu 10.04. I uninstalled 1.2 and reinstalled 1.1.16 and everything works fine.

Did you try 1.3? Although in development, it has a number of functional changes that feel like they should have been in 1.2. Would be interested in hearing if 1.3 resolves the issues?

I can recommend CrossOver brilliant app, if anyone wants a discount code to purchase it I have a 60% off code.
