Now firstly these figures correspond to the ones I showed, in fact you will probably find they come from the same report. Secondly no matter how many times, or from which angle, I look at these figures I cannot see the dramatic increase! In fact the trend seems to be downward...

Now from this I can deduce one of two things. One, you do not know how to read figures, or two, you are doing what I am always accused of and that is trolling. For the sake of your reputation on here I hope it is the latter.

Dude, Lancelot, I think you are just going to have to accept that some people will be negative and irrational no matter what the facts or truth happen to be.

Excuse me, what right do you have to say about my reputation? I have never once been personal with you? Infact I have been reserved with my comments. Oh if you read the threads you would have seen that the states posted by the SAPS and rest do not add up

I know, but it is still fun seeing what they try to throw at me and what their sources are. Also if they wish to question my points I will be polite enough to respond to them. :)

Would be nice if you didn't have to resort to personal attacks.

Its obvious why the numbers have declined according to this - they ran out of paper as the years went on (someone forgot to order more) so the stats couldnt be fully recorded. :p

Ha ha ha since when is me stating that "for the sake of your reputation on here I hope the latter" a personal attack on you? And I will continue with that thought process now... why post the first link then as I tend to read from top to bottom so when you post the first ten links you have found on google I tend to read the first one first. When this then confirms what I am saying I tend to not bother continuing.

I did, however, have a look at the next few after posting and did find the sources interesting.

The second one was dubiously from a website called www.gunowners.org and seemed like a newsletter of theirs. Leaving this aside they then also go on to talk about crime between 1994 and 2001 which is once again irrelevant to our conversation as your claim was that crime, along with everything else, has started going badly wrong in recent times hence your recent negativity. Stats from 2001 do not support or contradict this, so a bit pointless really.

The third one from a website called WWW.AfricanCrisis.Org, so we know where they are coming from. Again leaving this aside the entire article's basis is this is based on a book by Jim Peron and in particular this : "in Jim's book, on pages 104-105, he compiled crime statistics for South Africa from 1974-1997". Now in your previous link it was stated that "it is difficult to get crime statistics prior to 1994". So I do wonder what information Mr Peron had access to that others don't.

Fourth, again a report from 2001 using figures from 1998 which makes it irrelevant to our recent drastic increase in crime conversation.

And now I am not going to carry on as I have no need to read through every google link related to SA crime. Post something relevant and I'll read it with pleasure.

Well I do prefer the "when in a corner tell a joke" approach to the "list the first ten SA crime links from google" approach! :)

Funny that, you can guarantee when LancelotSA gets involved, the thread takes a step dive.

He's surely on a mission, forcing his opinions on others.

Boodles, if you go back to page one you will see that this is a thread started by me. How exactly can I be "stepdiving" (whatever that may be) my own thread then?

LancelotSA enjoy trying to convert people here!

I think that government should lift the moratorium on publishing crime statistics. There shouldn't be anything to hide when it comes to crime. Crime stats should be published monthly right down to suburb levels. We publish police crime stats in our suburb but we run the risk of breaking the law by doing so. It gives the residents a clearer picture of how close crime is to them and jolts them out of any complacency.

I found this quite interesting about statistical discrepancies.

Getting Away with Murder

While police crime statistics show that there were 21 683 murders in the year 2000, the Medical Research Council puts the figure at 32 482. The MRC’s estimate is close to the figure from the Department of Home Affairs, which is 30 068. This is a third more murders than reported by the SAPS, a discrepancy of more than 10 000 murders.

Given up your googling hey? Fair enough.

Good luck with the dramatically increasing crime rate in your little imaginary world.

Well there are more people in my world than in yours....

Again, that is the point of this thread really that people will always dispute statistics and facts if they do not support their beliefs. One does wonder how the Medical Research Council would have more accurate figures than the SAPS? What would their figures be based on? And Home Affairs? Surely they just register deaths?

The graphs used in this report are also identical to one quoted by Linoman but it only analyses data up to 2001.

LancelotSA remember this (can't remember who said it)

For evil to succeed all that is needed is for good men to do nothing!

For evil to succeed all that is needed is for good men to do nothing but b_tch about anything possible on a public forum!

Your assumption is that I am doing nothing just because I take offense to people unnecessarily bashing this country?

Hey, I of all people am all for facts, just don't distort them.

It's people who turn a blind eye to everything that let the world turn into a mess that it is..

I think that one thing that you can't hide that easily, is a body. The Medical Research Council would supposedly have stats of all bodies that have come to the hospitals due to murder. The Home Affairs department has to give the cause of death on the death certificates.
