Oh, gosh, optical is not anymore? :)
So you will need to update all video/audio equipmnent in the same time and it will only lasts for next 2 or 3 years?

I use Plex but this player is useless to me if it can't do surround sound, every single movie I watch I make sure it has 5.1 audio.

HDMI 1.3 and up can transfer the HD formats like TrueHD ... and that came out 10 years ago ;)

HDMI 1.3:
- No audio return channel (ARC)
- No enchanced audio return channel (eARC) (only in HDMI 2.1)
 
I'm also keen to know about the DSTV app tests and audio before I buy this device. Audio is equally important to me when watching video.

So hopefully more guys post their results on using this device, in the coming week.

Great yip thanks. easier way to access those side loaded apps.
Netflix - works android version , so exact look like you would have on a tablet , will try and find working android tv apk
DSTV - downloaded apk side loaded works - DSTV complains about VPN region bypass - so excluded device from VPN for now
Supersport - same as DSTV

for 5.1 audio - my system does show ac5.1 on sony surround system and sound does work via SPDIF cable .
also had it running via xbox HDMI passthrough with xbox audio via SPDIF and works.

did have a issue with some plex videos and multi surround sound not playing , think that was more to do with TV as didn't have a surround sound system connected to that TV , but just forced Plex to transcode and not direct stream as problem as sorted.

youtube is perfect haven't had any issue so far
Google play music - works 100%

Remote has a USB dongle for the airmouse , so you loose 1 usb port - would have been nice if it had built in receiver for the remote.
 
Thanks nemisiz, for the feedback. If you could please test Kodi, with DTS-HD and TRUE-HD formats and see if that pass through works. Hopefully you Sony system cant handle those formats.

I would prefer if it can pass them through.

I currently use Plex on a Samsung TV with audio via ARC so it can't do HD audio.

Time is not in telkom favour. Was so ampted to get the box but after the last few feedbacks im going to wait till the end of the week before I get either this or the mi box.
 
At this point I'm seriously considering paying the extra R500 bucks and just getting the Mi Box.

All the mixed feedback about how to get one cash, and on the device itself, is starting to make me doubt the whole thing. I just want something with Plex, DSTV Now and 4k Netflix...
 
I wonder if I can add the R49/m to my existing uncapped lte account?
