TopTV - The total costs

... and people are thinking they will be awesome. They are setting themselves up to be disappointed when TopTV launches and I'll be waiting with the popcorn for the TopTV complaint threads.

I really do think they will be awesome.

That is, if you look at it from my side.

I use to (cancelled last month) be a NoChoice subscriber with the MNET package for R283/month.

I only used MNET for the Sunday movie and 2 series programmes.

Can you imagine my excitement to only now have to pay R249/month and get aaaalllll that goodnes !

I can understand that an existing R600/month NoChoice subscriber would rather stay where they are, but for the rest of us 45million South Africans, this is a very welcome and much appreciated service. Does not matter if 'most' of the channels they offer suck, anything would be better than SABC1 SABC2 SABC3 ETV and MNET

what does the decoder look like?

Intriguing... R699 is not a bad price at all.

It now all depends on the actual content and, for me at least, the aspect ratio the content is broadcast in.

one month worth of DSTV almost pays for the decoder and installation... reckon im gonna go for this one time...

Sorry for the noob question but what does the broadcasted aspect ration affect? On my TV it is set on 16:9 but i can change to different styles, zoom, 4:? and some other options.

Well with time I think more content will become available.......so now I just need to get my Panasonic 50" Plasma then I'm a for away hey

GTI07, if I broadcast in 4:3 and you display in 16:9 the content will be stretched.

If I broadcast in 16:9 and you display in 16:9 then the content will appear in its correct ratio and look better.

Yeah R700 is not much for everything included!

These guys are doing what multichoice should have done long ago: make it available to *more* people, therefore charging *less*, which makes it a "more bang for your buck" product.

instead as time went on DStv kept charging more money, thereby losing subscribers, thereby charging more money, thereby losing subscribers, thereby charging more money, etc, etc.

Multichoice: You *DO* know that it doesn't cost more if more satellite signals reach more decoders, right? right?

2 people paying R265 is much better than 1 person paying R500:
- better bang for buck product
- more people on your side
- more people to advertise to = higher ad revenue
- more people that could possibly use extra services such as pay per view, add-on bouquets
- happier customers as they don't pay a fortune
- more people buying new decoders, remote controls, etc
- a bigger user base/market that is on *your* side - now ODM is just going to fill that market!

3 people each paying R180 for DSTV would be even better.......but yeah multichoice...keep going on the road you are going on - why not charge R1000 and just half your customers? yeah DSTV, you go Boy!

"Heish, our marketing managers calculatad dat if we charge R40 more this year, we will make 6 Meeelion rand extra profit!"

In what aspect ration should it be transmitted in? I have an old square TV.

edit..... oh sorry... I see you answered this question already.....

So guys I read that they will be broadcating in Mpeg 4 what is the take on this as ****TV currently broadcast using Mpeg 2, whats the feel on this as someone pointed out that Mpeg 2 is better than Mpeg 4

MPEG4 has a higher compression. So for the same quality output, the size of the file is smaller on MPEG4. ie MPEG4 is better.

Just to confirm my suspicions: I can't run TopTV and DSTV on the same satellite dish at the same time because of satellite position right?
