Torrents versus TV

While South Africans are waiting for competition in the pay-TV market, many tech-savvy individuals get their TV series and movies elsewhere

Damn right!! Cancel DSTV save R500 and get an axxess uncapped account and its tv viewing nirvana

Yeah.. South African TV is so far behind.. its only really good for news and sports.

Internet = you choose the content
TV = They choose the (out dated) content. Their choices suck.

Totally interesting article.

If there are copyright concerns, then let the content owners license their content for internet distribution or let them come up with their own sites for distribution and viewership. Just stay away from the DRM. Make it cheap enough and you won't need the DRM. Advertising is fine, but no DRM.

The complete lack of adverts in TIVO content is such a plus.

I can watch a series episode in 25 minutes, and then go do other stuff. Instead of watching 25 minutes (in addition to the program content) of useless repetitive boring adverts, of which, at least 30% of the adverts is the channel you are watching advertising themselves.

Damn I really hate adverts. So much.

Advert-less TV has improved my life, a LOT!

I would prefer to go the legal route but then the route needs to be affordable and getting the same content as receivable do online.

The only reason I even have a TV is because my wifes parents visited, wanted to watch and bought us a cheapie tv.
shhhhush..whisper*I dont even have TV licence*

Anime, movies, series, whatever your heart desire online now.

Let me see....DSTV prices are insane, way too many ads, way too many repeats, way too far behind.

Fix that up and I might consider resubscribing to DSTV

This ties into our post a couple days ago about how outdated the DSTv model is

It shouldn't be seen as a threat. It should be seen as legal competition. People will always watch tv and if they had a choice, many downloaders would probably pay for a similar service. This has been proven in american and the UK. The broadcasters need to get with the times and seriously start thinking about it. DSTV has started going that way with some offerings but they are still way over charged.

I do like the whole new rugby thing. R86 a month for both live and recorded rugby available whenever you want. Thats great!

what kind of line does one need for rugbyzone streaming and how much cap does it use?

I have to agree.

DSTV's programming is MONTH's behind the time, and fully loaded with ADVERTISEMENTS.

Where is the "PREMIUM SERVICE" I'm payin R500.00 a month for ?

I'd rather torrent, and get what I want, when I want, and watch it without ADS.

The content from the net is higher res, ad free, drm free, not lost when the decoder breaks, more reliable than Monochoice's PVR, cheaper, available on demand and up to date. Why would I support a corrupt, greedy, monopolistic, overpriced, backward service provider when I have the interwebz? Monochoice .!..
