I must say that I'm also considering canning my DStv subscription and watching shows via streaming or illegal download, especially in light of the fact the ADSL promises to come down further in price (and DStv promises to hike its subscription in 2010..again).
Heck, I'll even turn a mate with DStv's arm to get access to DStvBroadband via his subscription and download the shyte I can't get via the internet.

I've been without a TV for over 3years now... have to say that I'm (still) not missing much. Think the only "good" thing multichoice have are the sports - without that, they suck

If I look at DSTV's cheapest offering, its still more TV than I would watch and yet I would watch none of the stuff on that package ! Funny enough the do have a lot of content that I would watch but they refuse to sell me only what I want... they want me to pay for everything else.
Imagine going to a book shop and they make you buy the entire shelf if you want just one book ?? Craziness !

Rent an account on a server in the US for $7.95/m, use SSH's SOCKS support, and there you go.
Annoying, but not insurmountable.
Perhaps if DSTV had up to date series on their channels we would actually watch it. At the moment almost every show on the series channel is more than two years old. In fact they only add the series to the series channel around a year after it has been shown on Mnet, and its already a few years old by the time it first premiers on Mnet.
I dont want to wait two to three years in order to watch the latest series of my favorite shows. I could download it faster. I wouldn't mind paying for it, if its DVD quality and available for instant download. I have even ordered series on DVD in the past from overseas.

lets do the comparison, on side (a) we have , my own customized viewing schedule (playlist) where I can watch my content as I want, No advertisements and on my on pace. I even have this awesome PVR like functionality where I can pause to go take a piss. I choose the quality of the content etc.
On the other side hence forth refered to as (B) there is DSTV, I have 100 odd channels where I pay for content i dont necesarily want. They even charge me more for my PVR functionality, so I cant pause to take a piss unless I did so...which could get uncomfortable. I also have the ability to record the content they set available for me to watch, but the amount of content I can record is not all that much and it tends to normally be quite out dated aswell compared to option (a)'s content.
But in the end there is this little moral dilema, you know that atleast DSTV pays for their content, some of which you enjoy,some you dont. And you dont want to necesarilly rape the creators of this content, but what can one do?
I download though, this is the same area mp3's where in during the napster days, you love the convenience that comes with it. But then they tell you its illegal....click click bam

The only thing I miss from not having DSTV is my footy.
The only thing I use my TV for is to put tv series on it. SABC fails, monochoice fails.
In addition, downloading tv series is not illegal.

the adverts covers the cost, you just need the want to watch the channel. If they give updated series with some crappy adverts and I don't need to pay for it. Hell YEAH!

The only way that they can discourage this, or hope to compete, is to broadcast a TV series within a very short period of it airing in the states. But this won't be good enough for long. IMO, at the moment people d/load cause the aren't prepared to wait for DSTV to catch a wake up, or the show in question wont be broadcast here. Costs of Bandwidth is weighed against the beauty of instant gratification. However, when costs of b/width come down, it will be about convenience. If you missed the beginning of an episode of prison break that started five minutes ago, then just d/load it and watch from the beginning, without ads!
