What would be the cheapest insurance-approved tracking device currently on the market?

I think it's safe to say that most people including myself have seen time and time again that they do not work and are rubbish but for reasons that can't be mentioned here, insurance companies seem to keep this industry alive.
(Would love to get schooled with stats if someone knows if they actually make a difference or not)

So what device would be the cheapest just to humour the insurance? Had Netstar before. Every 3-year contract starts at R99 and ends up at R140 at the end.
 
My insurance does not require a tracking device, Santam.. Seems cheapest would be to switch insurer and you might save on the premium too..

Seems like the moment the value is above 500k they want a tracker.
 
1) Never install an Insurers required tracking system - they will use it against you
2) Never install a tracking system unless you are forced to by an insurer for good reason
3) I would not install a tracking device to obtain cheaper premiums
4) If I had a tracking system installed I would only use it at claim stage to recover people and or to reduce the theft/hijacking excess

But hey this is just me (yes 40yrs in the insurance industry)
 
Tracker not required and I am with Santam, But i do have one from netstar. the R99 package, why I have one, I dont even know.
 
I'm with Discovery, don't need a tracker. However they do offer their own "tracker" for driving behaviour tracking - if you want it. The newer one of these trackers does seem to be more capable than the older one so I wouldn't be surprised if they're able to track the vehicle to some degree even when not connected to my phone.

of course they can. Or use the tracking data against you in a claim.
Absa Activate also kindly offers a free spying device just like Discovery.

I have one of the older white Discovery dongles in my Mazda and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any GPS functionality, it must be connected to your phone in order to track your movements.

The new one is larger and was installed under the car, pretty sure this one has a built-in GPS.

I don't have a problem with them tracking my vehicles honestly, I get back half my fuel purchases so totally worth it :laugh:
 
Whatever tracking system you choose, make sure it is VESA approved. Members are audited monthly on recovery rates ensuring they achieve required recovery rate, plus you have right to report a member should you have an issue which is dealt with by VESA management ensuring the public are protected from fly by nights.

Until they claim you were driving recklessly when someone drove into the back of your car.
