TV

That said, 720p sets have one huge problem (and I'm not joking on this one):
When someone sees your new TV it will always go like this:
Visitor: Hey, nice new TV. Is it FullHD?
You: Em, no, ... bla bla bla ... explain explain explain
Visitor: I see.

With a FullHD set you get:
Visitor: Hey, nice new TV. Is it FullHD?
You: YES
Visitor: Nice.

I got a solution to this...

Visitor : Ah sweet you got a new tv! is it Full HD?
You : In this day and age!? What kind of question is that!?!?... You tell me!!!

**put on a blue ray x264 rip**

Visitor : Ya hectic man that looks so awesome of course its Full HD!!!
You : Actually its not...

pwned

:D

... yeah, I wnated to put this as an alternative for the HD Ready one:
Visitor: Hey, nice new TV. Is it FullHD?
You: YES
Visitor: Nice.

I got a solution to this...

Visitor : Ya hectic man that looks so awesome of course its Full HD!!!
You : Actually its not...
Visitor : *thinks* That would be so much better on a FullHD ...

:D

;)

You can pick up a 42inch full HD (1080) Mecer with a 3 year guarantee for around R5500.

You get very few *true* 1080p Xbox games. The reason is that the framebuffer is simply not big enough. As a result, sophisticated tiling schemes need to be employed to swap data in and out of memory.

However this does not mean that the picture is sub-standard. On the contrary, programmers come up with ingenius ways to provide the pixel count with satisfactory antialiasing (as once-upon-a-time Microsoft requirement, that was later discarded).

The original picture will usually be smaller than 720p, with the Xenos or RSX doing the upscaling to the required resolution.

Okay another question, the Samsung 40" LCD is a much higher resolution than the Samsung 42" Plasma's 1024x768

Will this not make a considerable difference for something like gaming and things like text sharpness etc. ?

Just a few quick questions : I have a small-ish lounge, 4.5 x 4.5 m...
What is recommended viewing distance for say a 40"-42" Plasma or LCD.?
Would that size TV be too large for my lounge ?
Would 1 type be preferable at closer range than the other or is it much the same ?

Pooky get yourself the LCD you will be more then happy with it, higher resolution, there is no need to clear it with some special filter or anything like that. The plasma brigade here are just going on and on about how good plasma's are but not actually giving any cons to them, most of the guys will be perfectly happy with their plasmas cause it is a big purchase, just as much as someone had told them to go for an LCD.

Okay then you do need to eyeball the two, but with your own source but also taking into account the pros and cons of both, the lower resolution of the plasma etc...

Test sharpness in what?

If you're connecting to Windows, and using it as a PC screen, get the LCD.

If not, I still advise you to get the plasma. Your main purpose is SD content and Xbox. This screams plasma to anyone with working eyes/ears. 99% of Xbox(/PS3) games are NOT full HD/1080p. I have absolutely no problems with text sharpness in movies. Forumites here rave about gaming on plasma too (it's obvious, since the response time on plasma is much faster, and the colours and blacks are better).

Pooky you've already compared the sets and know which gives a better picture for TV/SD IIRC. Since 99% of Xbox games aren't 1080p, it's obvious which will give you a better picture for Xbox.

Go and test your Xbox out on both. You've already compared so there's a hint at which will win, I guarantee you. You will then realise who the biggest fanbois are - LCD fanbois.

;)

Where will be most happy to let me try out an XBOX on their TV's? Game?

We will probably buy it from Game, or Hirschs.

Samsung PS42C430 - no question. Way more popular and documented than the LGs. The "tried and tested" plasma if you like.

You will not be disappointed, everyone's raving about it on these forums.

The LCDs' size is an unfair comparison. Would be a toss-up between the EX400/Samsung Series 5 and the LG LE5500 series. Remember LED-backlit LCDs are 95% marketing gimmick.

None of those LCDs/LED-backlit LCDs will suit SD TV and sport.
