Its with a heavy heart that i am asking to help me restore my windows 10 where it can actually boot again.
Here is the break down
1-i downloaded ubuntu latest build 22.XX jelly something( not a linux person)
2-I have windows 10 installed on my system and in bios its set to legacy mode. no uefi stuff
3- i wanted a dualboot where windows and linux co exist.
4-i pop in the live usb ubuntu and boot from the usb, goooood
5- i get the ubuntu live and proceed to install ubuntu, during the instal;l it said i got windows 10 and that option is to let both coexist.the other option was called SOMETHING ELSE,i did not use that as that mens i had to set up my partitions and all the other stuff so i opted the default where ubuntu will manage booting the dual boot.
6- this is where everything just went haywire.................the installation finished and ubuntu said take out the media plugged in and i did that, right the pc restarted and never came back on.
The error i get when i hard reset the laptop is hen it boots lenovo word come on the a type of tab come on and it says ubuntu boot failed.I then tried again and the there is just a black screen with a_ _ _ _ symbol flashing.Just darkness no sign of life and not even windows can boot cause there is no grub or bootloader .

7-i went into bios to see wtf is going on and somewhere in the bios i see by boot section EFI:ubuntu? what why no no no no.
I dont know what this means but i never seen a efi in my bios with ubuntu.

Right this is what i tried doing to fix it.
1-windows installation disk- system recovery....did not work windows say it cant fix the error
2-loaded ubuntu live disk and used boot repair tool......this did not work also
3- i tried all the command prompts available ot me in windows like bootrec/fixboot/mbr/ even tried EFI restore/ bootloader restore.... diskpart..etc etc etc.Nothing helped, i mean nothing and i am typing this using ubuntu which i can only boot with a usb with https://www.supergrubdisk.org/rescatux/ prgram on.
Can someone please help me fix windows dual boot with ubuntu.
PS:Sorry for the grammer i am so tired cause i been up alll night to fix this.

Eish, I hope you have a backup of everything on that hard drive.

Are you able to see the data on the drive when you boot with you Linux live disk (I'm presuming rescutux being a Hiren's Rescue user myself) - if so, dump your data onto an external 'cos I suspect that a full restore from emergency media is going to be quicker.

I've been out of the rescue game for so long that I can't give you any better advice than that I'm afraid.

Good luck.

in ubuntu i can access my files

ok there must be a way to fix this instead of the easy way our reinstall windows.I got alot of software which i use for my work purpose and i really thought ubuntu was stable and would not affect my pc.I really need a grug or other loader to work

Can you change the boot partition in the bios config? If you installed Linux to a separate drive your original Windows drive boot partition may still be there.

You said you are using legacy boot option. Was this how Windows booted before?
If windows was installed as UEFI, then you need to be in that mode to boot it.

i cant change the boot partition in the bios.Yes originally i changed it to legacy when i installed windows 10.I did not want nothing to do with the latter, and i took secureboot off.i did not install ubuntu on a separate partition.i was gonna cause i did create a partition of 60 gigs for ubuntu but i never used it as ubuntu live install was gonna do everything for me.
Update:i managed to reinstall grub but when i boot again grub menu comes up and i can select ubunu and it boots, but now windows 10 wont boot fro grub,I just get a black screen with a curser flashing in the top lef corner

with the rescue disk i see i get errors on mbr and efi for windows cannot be restored or created.Something is really wrong here. The entire mbr boot sector for windows is gone...thank you Ubuntu for doing your own thing and cause me to lose productivity.
As far as i am concerned Ubuntu 22 is a dangerous product when you use the wizard for installing. In all my years i have never had software that changes settings in the bios and make it permanent. This cant be cause you need to flash bios to make changes. This cd did this

Have you tried the utilities available on https://www.hirensbootcd.org/ ?

Should be something there that can help.

If you don't mind me asking, how many years is that?

In my (urk!) 3+ decades of fiddling about with PC's since Varsity days, the single most valuable lesson I learned was not to muck around in any shape or form with 'production' (ie work critical) equipment.

The software is never to blame since software (and hardware for that matter) is inherently not stable , so you just don't fiddle around with something that you can't afford not to be working

(looks back ruefully at many a night spent up until 04h00 in the morning recovering something because of software/hardware going rogue)

Edit: Have a look here (https://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmanager/hirens-boot-cd.html) to see if that helps. Either way, good luck and hope you get your issue sorted.

Did you run "sudo update-grub" after you re-installed grub?

Pretty sure you have to use UEFI with Ubuntu now so you probably just need to switch to that.

Ubuntu has replaced the Bootloader and will manage both the Windows and Linux startup.

Yes, it’s been replaced with UEFI.

It didn’t do “it’s own thing” this is what you told it to do.

It can’t change the BIOS. I just changed the bootloader as you instructed it to do.

The BIOS was however wrong for the bootloader configuration and just needs updating.

It’s 2022, you shouldn’t be using Legacy mode and expecting modern results.

Ubuntu has done this for at least the last decade.

Even Windows 10 really shouldn’t be used in Legacy any more.

ok the grub works, but windows 10 no boot or any sign.

I do have a backup of my laptop so the information is no problem , its the OS that i need to process my information..lol.I will do mine

Boot off Windows 10 installer and just run a repair.

Worst case you need to run FixMBR from the terminal.

Then Windows 10 will be back and you can dump Ubuntu and move on with your life as Linux clearly wasn’t meant for you.

ok the grub works, but windows 10 no boot or any sign.

Is Windows not showing in the grub boot menu?

i love legacy mode. no problems .So what you saying is i must reinstall window uefi. i did try to install windows uefi again but it failed.
Ok let me go to bios and set everything to default and reinstall winsows 10 with uefi settings.Gonna have to reinstall all my programs as the backup wont do this for me 100 percent.Knowing windows i am sure to get errors o even blue screens
