Hello Guys

I have seen rave reviews for 10.04 and I can understand why. I have never seen an os fly like that since installing (just to see) windows 98 on an athon 6000+ back in the day. 5 seconds to desktop I thought I would never see again. However is it just me or Ubuntu is broken.

None of my Web-servers work any more save for my demo laptop. The super speed is not enough if you get there and its broken.

Have to reboot twice to have all my sound working as well as getting the four drives to mount properly. Its almost as if the race to get to the desktop leaves some noticeable services behind. This problem is consistent from each cold start.

Everytime I re-install the sound "Pulseaudio" (any component for that matter) the sound works. I only realised by mistake that a reboot sorts everything out and its back to its sprity self. I wanna pull my hair out right now (mainly the greys) but, all the same is just me.

The unthinkable happened, had to move a one of my servers to windows with php5 and a windows mySQL instance after I gave up trying to get Apache working with PHP on 10.04. Everything just works on XP even though tested on Windows 7! Is it not supposed to be the other way around.

That is a bit strange, I'm running 10.04 as a web server and have not experienced any of the problems you are describing. Maybe a dodgy install?

I run a standard LAMP Ubuntu 10.04 server edition and it runs quite solidly. Have you checked your logs for errors & specifically segfaults? Have you accidently enabled a rogue firewall rule?

I too had huge problems getting sound working, pulseaudio was the devil for me. The sound would work after a restart but would then randomly die whilst watching something. I found that pulseaudio -k and then pulseaudio -D did the trick.

Thanks for the tip on pulseaudio. That will help with my media centre.

Regarding the LAMP server, as you say, the install on my Laptop (for all the tests before deploy) works so sweet, I do not understand why the main server does not work. Using an ACER 4060 laptop and the server is a E800 hp. XP, Vista, Windows 7 all install perfect on the E800 (needed to verify hardware was not broken), but, I struggle to get Ubuntu working on it. Same CD as used on the laptop. Tried 9.10 then 10.04 CD, result is the same. Once installed, everthing breaks the moment I do apt-get install php5. Each time, I can get postfix to work.

The point however that gets me is, why did it work perfectly at first on my Media Center Phenom 9550 on Nvidia 750a chipset, then break later on after updates (sound and drive mounting on boot). On my little one's PC, battled to install but in the end, worked great even with SMC usb wireless. Now gnome does not load. On the E800 refused to install until I started from 8.?. Was stable when I upgraded to 9.10. The moment I did the next step, Lamp broke. All other machines accepted dist-upgrade no problem but, different things broke after. Only the Acer 4060 just keeps on working no matter what you install, remove, reconfigure, test ... I think you get the drift. Its highly frustrating.

Anyway, perhaps you could advise on the chip-set you are running your servers on and I will go with that rather. Thanks
