Uncapped ADSL: How much data are you allowed to use?

Do you think a ‘Fair Use Policy’ on uncapped broadband services is a good thing?

fact is people want uncapped just so they can rape it...u u guys compare us to other country's like we are competing with them..we guess what we suck ass realty if u want 100mb uncapped unshaped unthrottled or whatever u fancy then go some that has it...these uncapped packages r awesome i think i was on a 20gig afrihost package no i pay like 90 less and can use 100s of gigs a month i think that that is very acceptable ...just my opinion no need to track down my ip and shoot me in the face lol:P

Simple, because it is labeled as an uncapped product. If I can't use 1Tb of data then don't call it an uncapped product. This is not rocket Science. It's plain English.
 
I know I said this elsewhere but I feel it's important...

T&C or "fair use" does not give an ISP the right to advertise something as something it isn't, period. This exact thing has been through the ASA before and the ISP was forced to stop advertising or calling that service as uncapped even after they moaned, gave excuses and pointed to their T&C and fair use policy.

There is no middle ground here, it either is or is not uncapped, 200Gb or 1000Gb is not uncapped, if that's the limit they should advertise it as such so someone else can reap the benefits when they advertise their uncapped service which isn't capped at all letalone at 200Gb etc.

It will only take 1 person to get cut off due to heavy usage and they can go to the ASA which will, as with the other ISP in a past complaint about this exact thing, force them to stop advertising it as uncapped. Doing so isn't just about nitpicking, again, it's so that an ISP that advertises a service as uncapped and doesn't cap it or otherwise stop you can reap the benefits they deserve by proving what they advertise.
 
For fark sake, it's not uncapped! Why do we have to keep referring to something that has a cap to it; as uncapped? So what if they say they have the right to ... once you have reached X amount? You cannot market something as uncapped if the T&C's state otherwise.

We reserve the right to investigate and possibly terminate any account that moves 100s of GBs per month.

The soft cap is not 100GB. Look at the wording 100s. The s on the end doesnt mean the limit is not 100GB it could be 200GB, 300GB etc So the discretion is left to Afrihost on when they will start investigating and terminating your account.

So if you are under 100GB then you will be fine. Dont know why you would use more than that.

I know that some users download 200gb+ every month. WTF do you download? I personally download HD movies and some series in HD & xvid, which works out to <100GB. I'm planning to cut down to <75GB since I've got most of the movies I wanted in HD.

what if I wanted to download the same Linux distribution three hundred times? :confused:

I want one for everyone in my local high school. ;)

So it's my right to do with my data whatever I want to do. :p

And it's my right to use an "uncapped" account to whatever limit I decide.
 
Uh... can someone point me to the cap on any of these accounts. I just wanna see where is says we will cut you off if you use xxx amount of gigs.

I know guys who move 800gb a month, but they're downloading for 5 people who all share the cost of an openweb uncapped account.
 
I don't mind fair usage. As long as it is around 200gb I'm happy. 100gb is also ok but for my uses I may as well stay with IS 30gb local only's for the price.

How about an experiment? You sign up for Afrihost and nail it all month long. When Afrihost contacts you about 'abuse' or wants to suspend the service you lodge a formal complaint with ASASA. Nip this thing in the butt once and for all :D

If I had a 4Mb/s line I would do it, I promise I would.

I'm frigging tired of companies selling products which do not measure up to their claims. You cannot have uncapped and then come with some policy contradicting uncapped, there is no ifs & buts, finish & klaar.
 
While I do not, in principle, disagree with the Acceptable/Fair Usage Policies, I strongly disagree with naming the product "uncapped".

As others have pointed out, uncapped implies that you will not ever be cut off, whereas the AUPs indicate otherwise.

To me, these products with AUPs seem more like "dynamically high capped" accounts.

Where do we draw the line 50GB? 25GB? 5GB? 1GB? With their definition of uncapped they can draw the line where ever they want.
 
Asking the same question "How can you download over 200gig" is dumb - it can be done. As said a million times wont be automatically capped/shaped/cutoff/stabbed for doing say 300gig in a month - the problem is if you are doing it every month on and on. And its spelled out on the isp's websites that its not the right package for you then - cause if its not tons of pirated content that you're downloading then its business related which means you need a fully unshaped unlimited business package ala mweb style...
 
I agree with acceptable use policies since ISP's have the right to make a profit and other internet users have the right to an acceptable internet experience.

Extremely high usage clients should pay more for the priviledge of downloading excessive amounts.
