Uncapped ADSL: How much data are you allowed to use?

It's great to finally see people arguing about Fair Usage Policies and Caps that are in the 100s of GB range, instead of the usual "R50 per GB pricing is ridiculous", or
"3GB is way too little" or "local-only FTW" or "the ISPs are raping us", or "/hands over the vaseline".

It's a sign that we have made great progress in the broadband revolution. There is still a mighty long way to go, but at least we are moving forward, and we have found the right highway.

Also, for a change, it's nice to hear the ISPs crying out "please don't rape us" instead of the consumer....

There seems to be so much concern about the possible 'capping' of 'uncapped' services. My take on this:
1) It is not a capped account - when you reach the fair use limit your account will be throttled. On a capped account you would be cut off, or have to pay an OOB rate.
2) If you're downloading over 200 GB/month on a regular basis, you really are pulling the ring out of it! However, if that's what floats your boat, get a business account and go crazy.
3) We should quit complaining, and be thankful to the ISPs who have at last made a real effort to give us what we have been asking for for so long!

That's fine, we never disagreed with that. it sounds like a fair policy.

We're only disagreeing with the usage of the term "uncapped" which doesn't seem to be a valid description of these cheaper high usage products.

Look at it this way... OpenWeb, Axxess, Vodacom and a few other providers already have uncapped products on the market at a higher rate.

Now along comes Mweb and Afrihost also offering and "uncapped" product, but at a much cheaper rate.

But when you read the terms and conditions you find out, oh wait... this is not really uncapped, it is restricted... so that's why they can afford to offer it at a much cheaper rate.

Wouldn't you be a bit cheesed off that these newcomers are trying to compete with you... but with an inferior or sub standard product?

How fair is that? I wouldn't be suprised if those other uncapped providers have already contacted the ASASA.

There is absolutely nothing inferior or sub standard about these products. Unless you are abusing them they are uncapped. You aren't cut off from the service at a certain threshhold nor do you pay for bandwidth above that threashold which is how everyone defines a capped service. If you are found to be abusing the service you are given warnings and only after repeated infringements are you cut off. Being throttled at a certain usage still does not mean that you are being capped.

For all intents and purposes you are uncapped. Just don't abuse the service.

How ridiculous can you be? If everyone decides to abuse these new services and they become unprofitable they are going to be withdrawn and those of us who aren't 12 years old and just want a decent service will suffer. Just as us consumers deserve affordable broadband (Which has just happened.) ISP's have the right to make a profit. That guy boasting about downloading 100gig in a day is also an immature little creep and hquite frankly he deserves to be cut off by his ISP.

People who are downloading 200GB/month really need to get a life (or a job). I really can't fathom how one can get to that amount, unless your life is about watching porn and TV series/movies all day. We live in a sunny country, go get some fresh air once in a while!

Compared to the true uncapped products there is. These are restricted, those are not. Same title, different products.

Not quite true. More accurately if you arrive at the all you can eat every day and eat 5 plates every day so that there isn't any food for the other customers, they're not going to kick you out - they'll simply say you are only allowed 2 plates per hour. That is exactly what'll happen here - it's not a cap! You'll get a warning if you repeatedly abuse the service and get throttled to manage bandwidth. And they'll probably only do it if the network is taking strain, so for most of the time you should be fine.

Can we please quit attempting to label heavy usage users as "abusers", "unfair", etc. People with imagination will find more and more uses for bandwidth. Some examples: musicians collaborating over the internet, dynamic virtual worlds, HD streaming, remote sensory perception, multi-site surveillance, etc. Just because YOU can't imagine uses for bandwidth, don't assume that others can't.

If someone were to come up with a new bandwidth heavy application (which is inevitably going to happen) they would be correct in choosing an uncapped provider, right? - until the said provider reveals that they're not actually providing what they promise.

I'm in favour of the ISPs using more accurate labelling as suggested, e.g. SoftCap 200GB.

This is where you are wrong. If you download significantly more than the average consistently you are a threat to that ISP's profit and a threat to the service of other customers.

Have you tried to connect to their news server? or Youtube or.... currently getting zero off their news server! Even at their worst Telkom does 10-15KB. They cannot handle the strain on the network so they CUT non-priority protocols.
You have to wonder, did they think ALL internet users surf only the MWEB site? So either they have too little capacity or are trying to make the biggest profit margin? Which do you think it is?
