Uncapped ADSL: How much data are you allowed to use?

why cant all these new so called uncapped accounts be called a 200gig or 300gig accounts, doing that would make things alot better for all of us that are used to paying for "true" uncapped accounts.!!!

Because they aren't 200GB accounts. The ISPs simply withhold the right to throttle exceedingly heavy users - there is no specific threshold at which this will happen, they will look at usage patterns and handle each case on its own merits.

Have you tried to connect to their news server? or Youtube or.... currently getting zero off their news server! Even at their worst Telkom does 10-15KB. They cannot handle the strain on the network so they CUT non-priority protocols.
You have to wonder, did they think ALL internet users surf only the MWEB site? So either they have too little capacity or are trying to make the biggest profit margin? Which do you think it is?

More accurately if you arrive at the all you can eat every day and eat 5 plates every day so that there isn't any food for the other customers, they're not going to kick you out - they'll simply say you are only allowed 2 plates per hour. That is exactly what'll happen here - it's not a cap! You'll get a warning if you repeatedly abuse the service and get throttled to manage bandwidth. And they'll probably only do it if the network is taking strain, so for most of the time you should be fine.

But it would not be an ALL YOU CAN EAT service if, under any circumstances (short of technical difficulties which should be few and far between, like a lightning storm damaging half their ovens, etc), you are not allowed to eat, well, all you can eat.

If you cannot do what the product description (all you can eat, uncapped, etc) says you can, then the description is wrong. It's really as simple as that.

I.S's uncapped is between 800-1100 for their uncapped & its limited to 1TB, i have never ever gotten more than 850gigs (i dont even know if anyone has gotten near to that limit on the 384 uncapped express accounts) on this account so therefore it would be uncapped, but you cant say that our limit is 200gigs because then its not true uncapped.

People who are downloading 200GB/month really need to get a life (or a job). I really can't fathom how one can get to that amount, unless your life is about watching porn and TV series/movies all day. We live in a sunny country, go get some fresh air once in a while!

If they can afford to download 200 GB/month what stops them, if you had lots of HDD Space, uncapped and nothing in particular to do what would you do?

Yes, the term Uncapped means that I can download every single linix distro since 2005, and not get into trouble for using too much cap. Uncapped means unlimited cap, it does not mean if you get to 200 GBs we might see fit to go to your house and murder you with hydrochloric acid, and then terminate you account.

There is no cap. They will kick your ass off their network if you abuse it but they do not prevent you from fair use, nor will they prevent you from downloading above a certain threshhold or sharge you for exceeding it.

Dyzel...LOL...you a capetown guy right? In the Northern Suburbs area. They will cap if you download too much. What if I download Open source software, Service packs, game demos, game patches etc. All legal stuff. Will they still cap you?

This is where you are wrong. If you download significantly more than the average consistently you are a threat to that ISP's profit and a threat to the service of other customers.

Then they have given me the wrong product. I wanted an uncapped product... but they have given me something that can't handle my demands. so who's fault is it for mislabeling or misrepresenting the product?

And there are business accounts for all of these uses.

What if I'm not a business, what if I'm a home user who wants to do all of those things? Or what if I have just started my business and I can't afford several thousand rand a month for a business account?

Seriously you South Africans deserve the crap you get. None of you have any imagination about what the internet can be used for or the potential for great opportunities here. The ISPs have trained you well. You will take what we give you and be happy with it.

Take off the blindfolds man, look at the rest of the world. half a planet away from us there are people using the internet at a speed of 100 mbps with no restrictions for less than what you are paying now. If you are happy to stay in the backwoods, then by all means... but the rest of us want to live in the real world.

You may not want to fight for it because you might be a coward, but the rest of us are willing to fight for our rights.

Yes, I am on one with OpenWeb. The only restriction I have is the limitations of my line speed.

But we bought the "unlimited cake and sweets" package from the party service provider. How can Sirius_The_Virus possibly exhaust an "unlimited" supply? :wtf:

If the provider feels that you are abusing their network and after investigation decides that they don't want you on their network, they'll kick you off. It's still UNCAPPED, because there is no cap. uncapped and unlimited are the same thing. The only limit you can place on an uncapped account is speed. The moment you place a measured transfer limit, then it is no longer uncapped. If any one of these providers contacts you and tells you that you have used too much, then it is not an uncapped product.

Is the fair use policy really about the number of gbs? or more about maintaining the QoS for all? if its the latter, then downloading terabytes of pr0n during offpeak times shouldn't impact anybody. I see no problem with shaping traffic and throttling downloaders during peak-times to ensure people can still do the important stuff...?

It's definitely throttled at 7am to 7pm... very clear from download speeds at around those times (watch especially at 7am for the clearcut dip from 400kbps to 26kbps). BUT WE DON'T MIND.

Read the article. These acceptable use policies are standard except for a few places in the world. There are large areas in the US where there is no broadband. Unfortunately there are certain realities ISP's have to face and the infrastructure/geographical make up/Cost of bandwidth within South Africa means that ISP's need to be a little bit stricter with their management to ensure an acceptable service for all their customers and a profit to stay alive.

I'm not about to kick the ISP's that are reshaping the South African telecomm's arena in the teeth.
