Crossflash TP-Link TD-W8980 to TD-W9980

The W9980 and W8980 are identical hardware / chipset wise. No changes in wireless either.

In those instructions - the whole part about dumping the original firmware and doing CRC checks can be ignored - this is just testing to verify that the tftp process can extract and reprogram the existing firmware - it takes about 2-3 hours to do this part - just perform the tftp of the new image and flash it - this take 5 minutes at most.

Has anyone tried this one yet?

I'm also considering it, I'm just a little hesitant on stability since it doesn't use a Broadcom modem chipset. I'm quite far from the exchange so I'm worried its not going to be stable.

It's between the Asus and TPLink Archer D7 (which has a Broadcom modem).

The Archer is not a VDSL router...

The Asus uses a Lantiq / Econet chipset which is said to be pretty fantastic. Sort of the best of both worlds.
Good with long lines as well as sync's quickly.

If you really want a Broadcom chip then go with a Zyxel or Billion VDSL router :)

Yeah I suppose the Archer D7 doesn't support VDSL, but I'm not too concerned about that since I will never get VDSL anyway.

I don't necessarily need a Broadcom modem, I just need a modem that is rock stable. I bought a TPLink W8980 and it's the biggest POS I have ever bought. Keeps dropping the DSL connection. Firmware is updated. Settings are fine. But it just doesn't work. Was honestly a waste of money.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. Wasting a lot of money on a modem that's not going to work.

That sums up my experience with all tp-link routers. And I have been through about 30 of them at various sites. Stay far away.

Alright, yesterday my Billion 8800NXL arrived and so far I am VERY VERY happy with it! I think I am one of the first to get this router in SA since Tarsus got their stock on Friday and still had to check it into their warehouse and yesterday morning mine arrived ^^

Initial impression and how it works, I am happy :D They seem quite chuffed that it is ICASA approved as when you login the top Billion banner has "ICASA approved" pretty darn big.
Telkom screwed up though and put me on a 40Mbit speed profile while I upgraded to a 20Mbit profile so I could not verify my line and do much testing - other than the Telkom Guest account - DAMN 40Mbit is fast! 5Mbyte/s :(

Got my line and all sorted out, able to remote into my home PC but am at work still so yeah. I will keep using it and see whether I have any issues - although as things stand at the moment I would recommend it.
Will do some more testing tonight with the WiFi signal.

Otherwise it sync's at a reasonable speed and allows you to adjust your SNR for better speed / stability as well as provides a good stats. Easy to use and has some pretty awesome features as well as some more advanced one.

If you guys have any questions or want to know anything - let me know :D

My 40Mbit VDSL upgrade was completed this afternoon and my ASUS DSL-N66U xDSL router was unable to stay connected to my ISP using it's WAN interface. A dial-up PPPoE connection from my PC however, worked perfectly. The VDSL link itself was rock solid on 40Mbit. After some experimentation, I ended up downgrading the firmware to version 1.0.7.3 and the router started working correctly. Have a feeling it might be related to the next version "Removing VLAN tag from WAN if enable 802.1Q" (their wording).
Hopefully this information will be useful to anyone else having problems with this device.

--EDIT--
Turns out the real reason for the WAN PPPoE failure was setting "Enable PPPoE Relay" to Enable. Just did this on 1.0.7.3 firmware and the same thing happened. I'm pretty sure this did not happen on an ADSL2+ profile.
Can anyone else with this Router on VDSL confirm if this also happens with them?

802.1Q is the standard which supports VLAN's...

Unless they meant if you specify / force a specific VLAN then it disables VLAN tags, so if the tag wants to put you onto a different VLAN it won't happen. I was unable to dial up a connection via my router and Windows if I did not have 802.1Q set to 835 on my router.

Where did you buy your billion router bud. I am looking at the asus vdsl router, but they out of my price range. What other options is there with vdsl routers that is stable in the price range of R1000 to R2000 in Sa

Got it from Tarsus directly.

Any IT store that has Tarsus as a supplier will be able to help you out.

I'm guessing retail price of the Billion will be similar to the TP link (around R1299) give or take. So should be fit price range.

I am sure Tarsus will ship to Cape Town otherwise the place you purchase from should be able to worst case scenario.
So being in CPT vs JHB shouldn't be an issue.

I have never purchased from any of those stores.

Alternatively ask w00tware if they are able to get the 8800 nxl in stock and ship it off to you :) Give them a call and see.

Yeah, the 9980 was selling for R1299 recently when I wanted one but there was no stock.

Glad I waited though.

How far you from the exchange and what is your stats on your 40mb/s line.

Is your router very stable without any issues

Well I have been having issues with my line for the past 2 months or so, line drops now and then. Everything was perfect when I got the line then suddenly issues started, waiting for Telkom to put me on a different exchange port and copper line from my house to the exchange.
According to Telkom and my attenuation from when I was on ADSL my actual copper length is 1.1KM from the exchange.

When I was on the 40Mbit profile these were my stats:

Now that I am on a 20Mbit profile stats are significantly better, over 20dB SNR on downstream.

Shame man that you have to go through those issues. Hopefully you get sorted out soon.

I myself had issues with my line recently. For the past few weeks my line use to drop with no reason where it could not sync at all. Then it comes back up when it feels like. Had telkom come out about a month ago where the guy fixed the line. Got the telkom guy out again on Monday and he told me there was no issues on the line. The weirdest thing that my line sync at 18 then drop to 16 then suddenly to 6 again. It's now on 12 currently on the w8980 on adsl2+. Dunno if it's got to do with telkom busy upgrading the exchange to vdsl. I asked the lady on Monday to bump me up to 20 as she says I can only go up to 20. I want to buy a vdsl router today to test if the line has been converted for vdsl. I am about 150m from the exchange.

Hopefully I find a router today
