Shame man that you have to go through those issues. Hopefully you get sorted out soon.

I myself had issues with my line recently. For the past few weeks my line use to drop with no reason where it could not sync at all. Then it comes back up when it feels like. Had telkom come out about a month ago where the guy fixed the line. Got the telkom guy out again on Monday and he told me there was no issues on the line. The weirdest thing that my line sync at 18 then drop to 16 then suddenly to 6 again. It's now on 12 currently on the w8980 on adsl2+. Dunno if it's got to do with telkom busy upgrading the exchange to vdsl. I asked the lady on Monday to bump me up to 20 as she says I can only go up to 20. I want to buy a vdsl router today to test if the line has been converted for vdsl. I am about 150m from the exchange.

Hopefully I find a router today

I have pretty much the same issue as you, line stats would go to **** and line would drop and sync at different speeds and then eventually come right again and be stable for 10 hours or so.

Even now with me being on VDSL and having amazing stats my line still drops. On my 4th router now so most certainly not the router. :p Hopefully the Telkom tech will come out today.

I first upgraded my line to 20Mbit ADSL 2+ and then when I got my VDSL router, a call to Telkom 10210 got me put onto VDSL within 5 minutes ;)

Ok now, busy configuring the router. What's the basic steps to configure vdsl mode
Did you already get an 8800nxl?

If not, I am sure you can get it cheaper elsewhere. Although soon, I'm not too sure.

Setting it up is simple. I deleted the current connection and created a new one with PTM and vlan priority is 0, ID is 835. The rest is the same as ADSL.

Is your 8800NXL working on VDSL? Also received one today. It syncs fine on VDSL, but won't do any PPPoE connections.

It syncs fine on 20mb on the default startup. Should I leave it like that. Is it automatically on adsl or vdsl?

Go to Status > Statistics > xDSL and check under Mode to see if it using A- or VDSL. Ideally you should be sync with VDSL.

How did you setup yours if I may ask

Mine is currently set to sync with any of the modulation types it supports (Configuration > WAN > DSL. I have ADSL, ADSL2+ and VDSL2 checked)

If you are using the Quickstart wizard:
Main port: DSL
L2 Interface: ATM

Instructions for new Billion 8800NXL:

VDSL here seems to use PTM traffic (think someone pointed that out). On the Billion 8800NXL you have to create a new connection to set this, the default one is set to ATM and you cannot adjust this other than creating a new profile.

1) Configuration > WAN > WAN Service, tick Remove and click Remove.
2) Click Add
3) WAN Port: DSL
4) Layer 2 Interface: PTM
5) Type: PPPoE (or Bridge, whichever you want to use)
6) 802.1P: 1
7) 802.1Q VLAN ID: 835

Fill in your username and pass. Click next etc.

Should work fine now.
Fill in the rest as per usual. Like username etc.

EDIT:
Proof that it is working
Download Speed: 36085 kbps (4510.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2759 kbps (344.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 34 ms

Thanks for the info bud, but I still cannot get a connection. Internet light is still off . weird thing is when I reset the router and just fill in my username and password then it comes up perfectly. I don't know why it does not wanna connect.

Phoned telkom too just too make sure they upgraded me.

Any suggestions guys
