KOPITE could you indicate whether it syncs on VDSL2? Because what I explained earlier requires that the modem syncs on VDSL and NOT ADSL. PTM Mode will not work on ADSL.

Full 20 down and 1 up

You are on ADSL 2+ 20Mbit then.

Call Telkom and ask them to change you over to a 20Mbit VDSL profile, as long as your exchange supports 20Mbit it shouldn't be an issue and will take a minute or two for the techie to do it over the phone.

I have not had any power since yesterday 1PM at home, so can't give you detailed instructions on how to setup your Internet connection for ADSL unfortunately.

Perhaps try get in contact with TelkomZA. Wesley seems to have taken over from Charl and also seems pretty clued up and able to get things done properly.

Billion 8800NXL VDSL Config

See the link. Made a quick PDF with screenshots on how to configure the Billion 8800NXL for VDSL.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/tnx4zg6575f381j/Billion%208800NXL%20VDSL%20.pdf?dl=0

I do mention there 802.1P Priority as 0. WebAfrica told me it should be 1, however based on my quick testing it will work on anything. The important part is 802.1Q VLAN ID which must be on 835, which makes total sense. As a different VLAN = different network altogether.

Just an update on my side - I switched my line to Vox and for cheaper than Telkom charged me for 20mbs I am now on 40mbs. Also when I call the support service I dont have to pull out all my hair every time!

Router is the TP-Link 9980 and also a TP-Link 8980 flash to 9980 and both work perfectly at 40mbs.

You don't wanna sell any of those? even the flashed one?

@PsyCLown I can't seem to find your Billion anywhere on Billions websites? Perhaps a link or Specs?

Yeah, seems the NXL is only sold in SA.

The NL is sold in the UK and the AXL in Australia. All more or less the same.

The NL doesn't have supported for 3G/4G and the AXL has 802.11AC support.

So you can look at either of those for specs as well :)

Although I think the AXL also has full Gigabit where the NL and NXL only have a single Gigabit port. The rest are 100mbit.

Just updated my post (#70) regarding problems experienced with my DSL-N66U router. Turns out the real reason for the PPP connection dropping was setting "Enable PPPoE Relay" to Enable. Happens in both 1.0.7.3 and 1.0.7.7 firmware releases. I'm pretty sure this did not happen when it was on an ADSL2+ profile. Can anyone with this router on a VDSL profile confirm if they experience the same problem?

No Problem. Wanted to know one more thing. Did you open the router to flash it? or telnet via one of the ports on the device?

No you cant telnet in as this gives you access to the kernel - you need to access U-Boot which is only accessible from the serial console - you need to open the device, add headers to connect a usb2serial device and then execute the u-boot commands to load the image from a tftp server and then flash it into flash. - It takes about 5 minutes

I know a lot of people have said the Pace is crap, but I have found it very stable and my wireless coverage has been decent considering its placement in my house.
The only downfall of it is the inability to change DNS settings. I just do it at a device level now.
If you are using it just as a modem it should work well for you.

So my Pace wireless capability has died. On reboot it starts up and then just dies after a minute or 2. I have tried resetting and reconfiguring the device but my wireless keeps disappearing. The rest of the device continues to work 100% so I have just connected a TP-Link W8970 (lightning struck adsl port) as a wireless access point and I must say that the wireless is much better now than what it was before on the Pace. I was happy with the pace but it seems the latency on the TP-Link is just that much better.
I might try flashing my Pace with the newer firmware to see if it resolves the issues but for now my combination is working very well.

I'm also having upgrade issues since my D-Link ADSL modem still connects (at 15Mbps). I have a plan: buy the Pace and once connected and tested, return the Pace for a refund and then purchase the 8800NXL :D
