this router stuff has me all confused. I wanted to get the tp-link c2 archer. its a gigabit router only. currently using the duolink for wireless and adsl. so by getting the c2 I can take the wireless load of the adsl router. but lately ive been looking at billion router + adsl. do you guys have separate devices or one combo deal?

It depends on what you want to achieve.
If you dont need anything special then just go combo.
But if you want the best wireless or something with special capabilities for routing then guys will usually have to break it into different components like modem -> Mikrotik -> etc.

I have a single "combo" router. It is easier and more than sufficient for most people.

Just FYI that TP-Link you mentioned is not a VDSL router, only ADSL.

Got a Pace today - other than a bit of a simplified interface and a few missing niceties (like being able to setup custom dns...) it seems ok so far. Syncing at 20mbps with no problems yet. If it lacks too many features I'll stick a mikrotik in front of it or something, but for R1249 I'm satisfied.

That is what I paid for my Billion 8800NXL on Friday.

Hi Patrict

There is a link to the most recent version of the firmware here:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/641936-Pace-921VNX-Connection-specific-DNS-suffix/page2 (it is in ZippyShare and I got it directly from Sizwe Broadband).

I have not heard back from SizweBroadband yet on the issues I raised with them and I notice they have removed the old firmware link from their website and there isn't a firmware download link at all any more. There isn't one on the Telkom site either, which previously pointed to Sizwe. Obviously something is happening, and I speculate they are putting in the fixes for a similar model in NZ:

http://help.spark.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/29376/~/pace-v5542-gateway---help-&-support

but cannot be sure.

Hope this helps,
Phaedrus

Yes thanks Phaedrus, much appreciated :)

I would love to figure out what chipset the pace has so I can look for compatible custom firmware but I see that the search thus far has been fruitless. At this point I'm considering popping off the cover to see if the board has any info on it...

Not that I've had any problems with the Pace so far, to be fair it's doing exactly what it is supposed to and had been rock solid so far, no reboots, no drops, no packet loss, stable sessions.

I'll post if I find anything, and would appreciate anyone else doing the same.

See the link. Made a quick PDF with screenshots on how to configure the Billion 8800NXL for VDSL.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/tnx4zg6575f381j/Billion%208800NXL%20VDSL%20.pdf?dl=0

I do mention there 802.1P Priority as 0. WebAfrica told me it should be 1, however based on my quick testing it will work on anything. The important part is 802.1Q VLAN ID which must be on 835, which makes total sense. As a different VLAN = different network altogether.

Thank you for making this pdf.

This really helped me a lot.

You are a legend Sir!

Bought the Pace and I'm not impressed. Biggest let down is the slow interface. Thinking of returning it for a refund or credit.

I've also found the interface to be inexplicably slow, have not managed to find a reason for this yet.

I've been running the Pace for 2 weeks now and while it does not have many bells and whistles, I have been able to set the custom config I wanted via the shell interface, and the connection has been solid.

If you do return it let us know what you replace it with, and how that performs

Got this Zyxel model.....VMG8924-B10A
When used it with Adsl 2+ my line stats were better than the billion I had before.
Once converted to VDSL things got even better!

With that Zyxel just make sure that they have released the new firmware, I was looking at one and then noticed that quite a few users were complaining about the firmware issues - there was a lot of semi-official firmwares going around (released by Zyxel, although via email and not on their website). :)

If no new firmware on Zyxel's site, try get your hands on those firmware. You can try the Kitz forum.
