Vodacom Data SMS's getting irritating, REALLY irritating

Yup, I got one at 2:50 this morning - I was not impressed.

VD, any chance of this ever getting fixed? It's about 3 weeks since the first report of it on this forum.

Yes , we are still trying to get to the bottom of this we have NSN(Nokie Siemens Network) investigating as well.

This must be one of the MOST ANNOYING events of the year for mobile users... my wife's phone get these messages from 2am in the morning and then sporadically for the rest of the day... REALLY, COME ON VODACOM , WE ALL NEED OUR SLEEP (and ACCURATE DATA BILLING and REPORTING! )
*The next time I see the word "4000kb" in ANY sentence on any screen I'm gonna have flashbacks* :-[

VD, you're not getting it.

We're getting these notifications EVEN WHEN THE BUNDLE IS VALID.

Here's the timeline:

21/11: sms saying only 4Kb left
25/11: sms saying deducted from airtime
25/11: sms's saying only 4kb left (10 times!)
26/11: got message on browsing saying that I don't have enough money left to browse even though I had R8 airtime left
26/11: recharged, bought new 20Mb bundle
27/11: sms saying only 4kb left
27/11: sms saying deducted from airtime
28/11: sms saying only 4kb left
28/11: sms saying deducted from airtime
28/11: sms saying only 4kb left
28/11: sms saying deducted from airtime
29/11: sms saying only 4kb left
29/11: sms saying deducted from airtime
29/11: sms saying only 4kb left
29/11: sms saying deducted from airtime
30/11: sms saying deducted from airtime (but note that even at this point, I've only used 4Mb or so of my bundle)

This clearly is not by design, it's totally incorrect. (and BTW, it sends the deducted from airtime when I start a session, and the 4kb left when it disconnects - often at 1:30-ish in the morning!)

Instead of asking for phone numbers to disable notifications for individual forumites, don't you think you should ask your tech guys what's going on? I want proper notifications, not a choice between this rubbish or nothing!

Yeah, I have the same problem. I get like 5 sms's telling me costs are now being deducted from your account and around 10 sms's telling me you have 4000kb left of data usage everytime i use the bundle.

The fact that this is a problem that started several weeks ago, suggests that something slipped through the cracks where Change Control is concerned...

This is the scenario at the moment:

So if I have a bundle of 30MB and browsing the Internet, even though I use 50Kb, the IN (Balance) reserves 2MB.
I continue browsing a further 50kb and 1700s later another 2MB reservation takes place and so on for as long as the session is open.
Eventually the reservation accumulates so much that it breaches the SMS Notification Threshold set on the IN and the SMS is sent out.
But my ACTUAL Bundle is still hovering below 30Mb but my AVAILABLE Bundle on the IN much lower as it is = Actual Bundle – Reservations.
Once I end my session, the reservations are put back and the AVAILABLE bundle is equal to the ACTUAL Bundle, but if i start another session the entire process is repeated.

This has been top priority with the guys, On the IN especially with Service issues, there is a lot of investigation/simulations/analysis etc. that take place to ensure that we find the proper cause of the problem, hence the lengthy periods for diagnosis.

Hi VCD

Thanks, I do understand the basics of the pre-paid data reservation system, this is how it has been from the start AFAIK, however something seems to have changed to cause such a widespread problem with SMS notifications.

It seems clear that either Vodacom's pre-paid data customers have been buying smaller data bundles than they used to [maybe it is a seasonal oddity - having more time to browse on their phones perhaps], or something has changed on Vodacom's side...

Regards

ic.

PS: @forumites, when posting here, please post the size of pre-paid or TopUp data bundle that you purchased, and maybe what the remaining size is.

Weird thing is I haven't received any more of these messages since those on 2009/12/09, not that I am complaining! :)

This is first time I have received these messages this month. I purchased a 20MB pre-paid data bundle for my mobile on 2009/12/05.

On 2009/12/09 at 02:47 I received the following:
You Only have 4000 KB left before costs will be deducted from your call account.

On 2009/12/09 at 03:44 I received the following:
Costs are now being deducted from your call account.

This morning I checked *111#,1,6 and it shows:
You have 18.57 MB available to use.Your data bundle will expire on 20100201.

THIS is the reality. You buy a 5mb data bundle and it immediately sends you a series of messages (from +27820099892) made up of the following line "You only have 4000 KB left before costs will be deducted from your call account".

The data bundle seems to get used at a very fast rate, despite only using it for a few things. A balance check says "0Mb left", so one would assume that no reminders would now be necessary. Beep, wrong!

"You have 26 new messages". Yes, the same messages again clogging up the inbox saying exactly the same thing.

Why?

Vodacom needs to pull finger, go back to the drawing board and/or undo the changes. We, the public are so tired of being the Beta testers for your software! {though Beta is not accurate either :twisted:}

This truly sucks!

Well My messages stopped for a while just after topping up with 250mb data, but resumed again shortly after.
Well I am really p***ed off with this problem that VC can't seem to correct.
What seems strange to me is that I only get this on my 275 topup and not on my 315 topup. The 315 topup is used only for data and my 275 topup for both voice and data.
The 275 is used in my phone and the 315 in my MC 950D or B970.

Come on VC, if you cannot fix this problem what confidence does that instill in your consumers going forward?

Constant spam on iPhone

Hi, I'm using an iPhone 3G 16 gig edition. I'm on pay as you go and I buy data packs from Vodacom to surf the net. For a few months now, everytime I buy a data pack I get spammed SMSes from Vodacom:

You only have 4000 KB left before costs will be deducted from your call account.

or

Costs are now being deducted from your call account.

These messages just keep coming, all day, in no set pattern, yet it is clear that 'costs' are not being deducted from my call account - my airtime never goes down unless I make phone calls. I have gone through all my apps, and I have made sure none of them are attempting to connect to the net or use IM push or whatever. I've tried resettings, turning off 3G, wifi etc, but it doesn't seem to stop. What can I do?

same problem here, been going on for almost 2 months now, last few days I've had like 40sms...

went to the Vodacom store today - got no joy ("system offline"

phoned 111 - told "we are aware of the problem, and our technicians are working on it"

not very successfully clearly - why can't they just turn off the system / delete the code!

Careful, they might just send you a daily sms saying "We are working on it, please be patient".

Still fine for me, I have 9.43MB remaining on my mobile's data bundle.

If you guys use MDMA the SMS wouldn't bother you, ever...
