Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

My prepaid simcard hasn't been able to connect at all for the last 2 weeks. I usually check my gmail on my phone, but no success. I wonder if this is related? Customercare thinks my simcard is broken.
If I try to connect through my pc I just keep getting "PPP link control protocol..." errors with my prepaid sim.

Ajax, it has nothing to do with your sim and everything to do with our friendly service provider Vodacom.

I've been having problems since the weekend!

I can correct 100% but although connected to the network no data can be transfered! This requires sometimes up to three attempts to connect before things are working normally.

Another interesting oddity is that once connected if I don't use the connection for 20 minutes or so (although still connected) no data will flow! This again requires one or more reconnects to clear.

Its a bit of a pain as I have at least two applications that require random access to a support server.

If the link is actually running then the speed is OK!

I'm also using PPDB.

Im getting the exact same thing in Oude Westhof, Bellville. Had to reconnect 3 times last night before i could open up any webpages. Then when doing the vodacom speed test, it stopped halfway through!! Doing the test the 2nd time, i got 118kbps download. Even though my 6680 says 3G, full bars. :(

(By the way, im also on PPDB on a Topup 135)

Speed wise no problems this morning at 6am. Vodacom test gives 366 kbits/sec. No time-outs on pings.

Is the network overloaded at peak times?

Don't think its a peak vs off peak issue, experienced the same problems from 2-5 am whichi s hardly peak time. Not sure if its related but I check Gmail constantly on my contract phone and its been working fine.

Well, a bit of both I suspect. The pre-paid sims go through a different sign-on process so it's not impossible that we having specific pre-paid problems.

Anyone else seeing a different set of symptoms for pre-pais vs contract.

Ajax, won't you pm me you tel no and e-mail addy?

Basically in my experience contract works perfectly, prepaid barely functions, this is with everything else held constant and just changing the sim card. Been worse than ever today, barely functional.

V3g I have pm'ed you my number as well. Please take a look for me. I just want to finish off the bundle, I promise thereafter I will go away. Never to darken your door again.

It's daytime again, and slow again. Vodacom speed test gives 59 kbits/sec down and 58 kbits/sec up. Some time-outs on pings to Vodacom.

JimM (and others)

I saw this a short while back on my normal contract sim - before I could prove it conclusively, it went away. When this happened, I was still able to send and receive mail, use ftp and almost anything other than browsing using http. May be worth checking this out and letting V3g know if this is what you experience when the throughput "stops".

lo all , done the speedtest.

Results are :

Download Speed: 1093 kbps (136.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 331 kbps (41.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

If only it can stay on like this , I can deplete my bundle in no time and move on. Please

this is proposterous

Are there problems connecting 3G in KZN, south coast at the moment, my boss is down there throwing his toys because he can't connect.

ajax, the guys are in your area amd trying to get hold of you. Maybe mail me a contact number.

Thanks, I got hold of Shaun. Unfortunately I just wasted 2 hours at the traffic department to renew my drivers licence, so I must really get to work ASAP.

Shaun will call me on Wednesday.

He just went to a Vodashop in Toti, they told him that all Pre-Paid have problems in KZN today.

Luckily I have had a good connection. 5.7GB used so far this month (the on line report shows I have 170+ pages of detailed billing)

V3G - Is it possible I can get rid of this detailed billing as I get a book from Vodacom each month?
