Problems again

Have had problems connecting again. Same as previous. After reading about difference in contract and pre-pay decided to experiment.

Contract - 100% throughput and connect first time everytime.
Prepay - musical chairs.I could not connect at all this morning.

v3g could you be so kind as to get this checked out please. It is unacceptable. I would also not appreciate being ignored like IDOL was.

Checking up on it.

As a general note; A series of software patches are rolling out starting tonight in Pta.

Looks like the trouble has rolled out here as well. (The patches???)

All was ok before yesterday - but from last night, bad, now no 3G, GPRS only and V slow.

Still nothing here in Centurion. I'll be going MTN prepaid for May and then relook at VC for June.

My VC prepaid bundle expires on 8 May, still 400 odd MB left on it. Will the validity be extended to compensate for all this downtime, assuming things aren't rectified by then?

Still very slow throughput for here in Kei Mouth, Eastern Cape on GPRS.

I also getting loads of packet loss on both local and international sites.

Latest Speedtest on "Edge" enabled tower:

DL: 45kbps
UL: 20kpbs

...just as an observation, why is it then when I run the speed test I get the above speeds, but I browse this site for example, on DU meter my DL speed never rises above 20kpbs?

What magic potion does the vodacom site have, because it seems to be the only place i get 40kbps odd?? Everywhere else is half that.

v3g, I vaguely remember that there is a way to get Vodacom to send one's bill out via email instead of snail-mail, do you perchance know if there is a way of doing this via SMS? - it doesn't seem to be an option via v4me - I don't particularly want to do this via 155 or the accounts department due to my long cryptic and seemingly random email address system...

Maybe mail customercare and ask them? Don't think it can work via SMS and, in any case, your e-mail addys don't normally fit into 160 characters!

What is going on? 8 tries to get a valid connection on HSDPA! I'm trying to use the rest of my 1GB up before Tuesday but I can't get (or stay connected) long enough to do so!

If that were not enough the ordinary GSM network was unusable for most of yesterday!

What are Vodacom playing at?

My 3G/HSDPA has been down for the last couple of days...
What's up V3G?
I'm only getting GPRS(barely)

Without going into a whole long story about the internet etc, MyBroadband.co.za is on an external network, i.e. not within Vodacom's network, so the Vodacom speed test only shows the speed you are getting whilst still within Vodacom's network, and not the speed you are getting outside of Vodacom's network.

As for the 20kbits/s, you cannot take that to be a reliable indicator of the maximum speed from Vodacom's network to where MyBroadband.co.za or any other external site is hosted - to test the maximum possible speed along a certain path [or route] you have to download a large file and time how long it takes to travel along that path and get to your end of the connection, i.e. the webpages served by MyBroadband.co.za are not large enough to indicate the maximum possible speed.

Thanks for the explanation ic :)

Muldersvlei, Klapmuts
Linksys router with Option card
APN Internet

ping -t -l 500 smtp.vodacom.co.za
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 40, Lost = 10 (20% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 475ms, Maximum = 1143ms, Average = 772ms

ping -t -l 1000 smtp.vodacom.co.za
Packets: Sent = 42, Received = 39, Lost = 3 (7% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 994ms, Maximum = 4184ms, Average = 1552ms

Besides the timeouts, my router frequently looses connection to the network:
Mobile network Bearer: GPRS
Network Name: VodaCom-SA
Signal strength: Excellent
# Connection Time: None
# Current Session Usage: None

The router seems to connect if I change the APN to vlive, and then back to internet, after a session is established.

My "edge" (aka gprs) speed at the moment:
Down: 79kbps
Up: 26kbps

As a matter of interest, besides ajax [using a Contract Data Bundle], who else is experiencing the problems described in this thread specifically using CDB?

I ask this, bcos, apart from ajax, it appears as if the problems experienced, are limited to Pre-Paid Data Bundles.

@ajax, maybe the problems you've been experiencing are area specific...

I have been having the same sort of problem for about a week...

I am on a 4U zero contract and run EDGE which is giving me 75kbps down and 13kbps up. I normally get at least 160kbps down and 25kbps up. Reported to 155 two days ago with no result... reported again early this morning and still waiting

I have an additional problem with balances... I have a 1gb monthly bundle and then adjust near the end of the month by adding an ad hoc bundle as needed... I can never see the balance after adding the ad hoc bundle and the 1gb bundle just runs out and I run blind till the end of the month. Last month I got billed R1700 but have been advised that I will get a R1600 credit on this months account. Holding my breath.

I have been pretty happy with speed and reliability... but the back office stuff stinks..

I do believe so. Again, it's only during peak times. This weekend speeds have been excellent.

I think I have been too evangelistic about this product and as a result too many of my friends and colleagues from Stellenbosch have signed up. Perhaps I should keep my mouth shut from now on

Any idea if Vodacom are aware of this PPDB issue and are they doing anything to rectify the situation. It's been far too long. Don't even tell me it aint an isolated ppdb thing coz all my mates around me can connect with no problems and they're on contract.

We're very aware of the problem and are working day and night, with the suppliers of the networking equipment, to resolve these issues.

Definitely seems to be better this weekend, still having problems but not as frequently, maybe because there's less load on the network?

@vodacom3g: thanks for the reply. Good to know it might get sorted out soon. Cheers

I have just run the speed test and am getting a better EDGE down speed of 110kbps and up of 31kbps this morning.... this is still not equavalent to the 160kbps down that was normal a week ago but an improvement on the 75kbps that I was getting over the weekend.

I wonder if there is some crude form of throttling taking place here to protect the speeds of the contract users?
