Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

You do realize that you will never get 4mbs on a telkom line , these are all theoretical speeds no service provider MTN , CELL-C Virgin and Telkom can say you are going to reach A speed of 4mbs . All the ads you see says UP TO .So in a perfect world where you are a stones throw away from the exchange and you have fiber instead of copper you will reach these speeds.

Yes, but if the client was getting better speeds and now suddenly he is not, then something has changed.

Besides looking at his speed test results, his problem looks like backhaul constraints more than anything else.

Taking into account the tower his connecting to Brixton , this tower serves quite a few people in the area (i.e cell breathing).

Not to mention growth in that area as well.

Cell breathing as I understand it will affect the stability of your connection more than anything else (i.e. more people in the cell, it shrinks people on the edge drop off). Growth and number of people using the tower will affect the amount of backhaul available to all parties in addition to the size of the cell footprint.

The upload speed indicates to me that the user is getting good signal (i.e. not affected by cell breathing) but his download is capping at 1.8 which means not enough cable to the tower.

Cell breathing will affect speed as well as load balance him so if it finds that the tower is carrying to much traffic it will send him to another tower ie load balance will affect signal as well but not that detriment to his connection.

also keeping in mind there are different hardwares used on our towers depending on geographical area ie alcatel and motoroloa BTS as well has hauwei now. They aslo use different coding schemes

So if I understand you correctly you can be subjected to cell breathing even if you have good signal? Surely if you are connecting to your closest tower and it decides to push you off to another tower it will be further away your signal will be affected?

So a tower serving the same amount of people serving the same amount of data will perform differently depending on the equipment and coding? Would that be why the Hauwei kit is being installed?

I am getting to the limits of my 3G knowledge, so forgive the naive questions :D

No problem Sir

We moving towards Huawei they upgraded the whole of nelspruit already and we still have the guys(Chinese techies) tweaking the the system.This is a swop out on all BTS in nelspruit(imagine the task at hand)

This will eventually work its way to other parts of the country, huawei has a proven track record i.e reliability and has built a few networks successfully as well. This is also in line with LTE
 
Whats happened to 3G+ download speeds?

Hi

For the last month or maybe even 6 weeks I've not managed to get a download at more than 25 kb/sec?

Anything I try download seems to kick off at 40 Kb/sec and then within 30 seconds it's dropped to less than 25 and I tend to average about 15/sec

The first few months when I got the E220 I managed to consistantly get 70+ kb/sec

I have uninstalled AVG, Ad-Aware, Steam etc to ensure than nothing else is downloading. Windows updates are also set to manual.

netstat -b shows only the http connection to the download I am attempting but to no avail nothing seems to help, even though I am supposedly on 3G or 3G+ (HSDPA)

These download speeds are also at any time of the day, day or night.

Have you tried a download manager that splits the files and downloads them simultaniously?
25kb/sec is a bit slow.. I used to get that with normal 3G prior to HSDPA
 
Problems in CapeTiown CBD?
Having problems with my 3G connection in CapeTown CBD. Connects fine, but can't even complete a Vodacom speed test, or connect to well known sites.
Logging this problem via our office infrastructure.

Install a free firewall and you won`t have to uninstall to do the tests, you only allow through whatever you want to.

Once installed you just have to tweak it not to be annoying (easy)

Well in the past I have received 70+ kb/sec through a IE download, only recently has it degraded as explained above. I know IE downloads isn't ideal but its never given me issues before.

Now that you mention speedtest.net, I constantly use this when struggling with speeds and seems fine.

Its not just IE, thats just the main issue. How about trying to watch videos via utube or similair videos located on www.ephotozine.com (TV section) is slow as heck.

My point been that this was never and issue until recently as explained above.

All I need to know is if it is a general problem that Vodacom is aware of, and dealing with it or if it is something I can fix myself to get a better download speed.

P.S. even with the firewall off it makes no difference to the speed

Am in CBD now and find no problem .

Have you tried IDM , flashget e.t.c , i normally max out 3G at home and work when downloading files.

Thanks, Morkhans, that's exactly my point. Why did my speeds suddenly drop from around 3 to 1.8?

VodacomData, I am not sure why you are bringing in Telkom ADSL here. I am using Vodacom 3G. :confused:

I understand the problem of cell breathing and too many users, but how does this account for the relatively slow speeds 24/7? And why did these factors not affect my speeds before? :confused:

A couple of weeks ago, they laid fibre from the Telkom line in High Street to the entrance of the water tower. Is this for extra backhaul, VD?
