I see it's on myADSL's front page.

SAIX say they rerouted some of the bandwidth, so it might be a bit better.

mtn vs vodacom

mtn vs voda using speedtest.net

rather daming results but here they are:

voda using E220 on dv9291 hp pavillion laptop

SA to UK 55kb/s down and 101kb/s up latency 999ms
SA to OZ 44kb/s down and 69kb/s up latency 999ms
SA to USA 93kb/s down and 56kb/s up latency 999ms

mtn using htc tytn as modem on desktop amd dual core 4000+

SA to UK 814kb/s down and 55kb/s up latency 709ms
SA to OZ 526kb/s down and 50kb/s up latency 999ms
SA to USA 983kb/s down and 57kb/s up latency 444ms

Time, 7:45pm. Location, Godonsbay(home at last).Latest Speed Test Results:
Download Speed: 391 kbps (48.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 150 kbps (18.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Now taking +-45seconds to open webpages.

"Oh HSDPA, oh HSDPA... where art thou HSDPA?????" :(

which speed test were you using there Iam3G?

what I find most entertaining is the vodacom speed test, the result is as follows:

1459kb/s down and 58kb/s up

I mean come on? it's not worth S..t

This afternoon my Download Speed was close to 2000kbps(+-250KB/s). But i still was battling to browse. Now here at home in the evenings that's what i get. And its gotten worse over the last 4days. I could have saved R300 instead of a Data Bundle that feels wasted this month.

You need to see the test for what it measures, the Vodacom portion of the network. It shows that all components up to where you break into SAIX is not congested. After that, it goes for a ball of the proverbial.

We built this test to help isolate any potential bottlenecks and it's been extremely useful in doing this.

not sure what conclusions can be drawn by that test. To be frank I find it misleading and insulting. Almost as if vodacom is attempting to vindicate their product and aportion blame elsewhere.

Surely if one conducts a number of speed tests to 3rd party servers using say mtn and voda (being the 2 main mobile networks) the results more accurately represent the real world efficiency of the respective products?

I'm sorry but I'm not entirely sure what the voda speed test reveals about the efficiency of the connection other than good signal strength which one can read off the software.

I think typically if I were to do a speed test on iburst using iburst hardware etc the speed results would translate into real world efficiency. I use iburst at my office and typically these are my findings. If the test tells me 100KB/s then inevitably these are the speeds at which I find myself DL at...

Don't know if SAIX just came back, but I just downloaded a 60M (international) file at 89KB/s (nearly 1Mb/s!)

I wish!

My Vodacom HSDPA is slower than a dial-up connection tonight. I'm really getting pissed-off.

HSDPA seems to have come back to normal. Its between 7pm and 9pm that the cr@p started happening. Same as last night.

There are many elements in the path between your PC and the ultimate destination you're trying to reach, including the tower and many links through the VC network, right till you break out onto the internet.

The VC speed test gives us an indication where a potential problem lies and allow us to fix the actual broken bit.

For example, if you get...

VC: 50kb/s
Telkom: 50kb/s
NY: 50kb/s

...it's patently clear that the problem lies purely on the VC network.

If you get...

VC: 500kb/s
Telkom: 50kb/s
NY: 50kb/s

...it's a local peering problem.

If you get...

VC: 500kb/s
Telkom: 500kb/s
NY: 50kb/s

...it's an international bandwidth problem.

And so on. In all three examples you still getting a crap service, but at least we can pin it down to the faulty area.

If multiple people now run this test from around the country, we can start plotting with great accuracy where the problem lies, thus my request for your location information. Knowing what kind of throughput you're seeing from where, allows us to build a real-time model of the network performance.

We obviously have monitoring tools on all the major links, but one thing we can't do is test right from the air interface at every cell. Would require about 18000 PC's!

So your contribution to the stats is very helpful. Also, most people here are very technical and like to do their own testing. Thus I made the server public, so everybody can use it. This way you can test if your latest driver, etc. is performing correctly.

Also, it makes Vodacom publicly accountable, no-one can bullsh*t you on where the problem lies. All nice and open, you can see for yourself where the problem lies, as it should be.

It would seem that Vodacom doesn't have enough qualified technical personnel.

I dont think its that, this performance issue started to come in when VC dropped prices and it caused a influx of ppl that VC wasnt prepared for. Before the price drop the speeds were almost as good as the connection I had while in the UK.

End of the day this HAS to come right. VC is a huge company and they dont have the same attitude say as Helkum. This is a problem that will come right, we just have to ride the storm (can see the flame posts coming). I believe that once this teething phase has ended VC will be top of the ISP chain again.

VC just dont take to long...
