Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

What surprises me is that the Vodacom speed test shows good speed for my EDGE connection but I am having a problem getting even local sites to open... don't lets talk about international sites... this after getting pretty good real speeds over the weekend.. Shouldn't Voda class their service as "Beta" like all the new Web 2.0 sites do... certainly it is not a stable production service and we are no more than guinea pigs paying for the privilege of testing for them... this should be a free service until they get their ducks in a row..

I sort of scanned through this thread, and I am a bit worried. In the last week or so I only managed to get the internet to work for about 10mins or so, if it would connect at all.

My wife uses the 3G for emails and she is desperatly trying to sort out a crisis with Unisa over email. But imagine trying to do that if your internet is not working.

Apart from that, my bundle expires tomorrow, and I have only used half of it, simply because it doesn't work. So down the drain goes R150 worth of data, because VC's network is down.

Is this problem going to be sorted out soon? Because I am not very keen to buy another bundle of disconnects. Should I rather stick to MTN (at twice the price) next month?

Regards,

JJF.

I hate helpdesks!

Cant connect at all on my prepaid sim. My contract sim is perfect. sigh

Yup same problem here with pre-paid. I Spent 11min on hold for 155. Gave up and selected call back. 40min later I get a call. Then 30min messing with all the settings on my phone. Trying to explain to the agent that everything worked yesterday and that nothing had changed was futile. He assured me that he was in Cape Town CBD and was having no problems what so ever. The agent then refused to give me a ref# before I had done another test which involved swapping my sim into another phone to test and to test internet from my wife's (contract) phone. This required me to hang up. I at least got his name. I Could connect using her contract sim

I then called back (there was now an announcement that there were GPRS and 3G problems) and predictably could not get put through to him (after another 9min on hold). That agent then also refused to give me a reference number unless we repeated all the tests that I had already done (aaaaaaaarrggghhhh). So he sent Maddy and email to call me back.

(waiting)....

While typing this up I got my call back and a ref.

V3G & IC. I am sorry, but spending 2 hours+ (on the phone + waiting for call backs) is a lot of personal time wasted trying to find faults that Vodacom should be picking up. If the agents can't give us some leeway when calling to log a fault (i.e. ask the basics, skip the drill and gimme the ref#) then I'm not going to waste my time unless I am absolutely desperate. I'll will stick to reporting back here.

PS. Had to chew R2/m on my MTN account to drop this post

Glad Vodacom is upgrading capacity,but
i have 4 days left on a 2gig bundle and i would like to use it!
Im writing this message on VIRGIN!
God awful but at least it works(eventually).
Dont suppose vodacom will give its customers who cannot connect a days grace?
I know the answer to that question....
Why should i put up with this?
700mb left and i'll be the hell in if i dont get to use it up.
Slow service or disconnects are forgiveable for a few days.
But being unable to connect is criminal!
STRIKE 1 VODACOM!

Yup, same here. Was also down for me last night (prepaid) - I checked it with my girlfriend's 3G contract SIM - perfect, but no go on prepaid.

Seemed to be working OK most of the day today, a few disconnects, but when it was up I was pretty much getting wire speeds.
Went down at around 5 this afternoon and is still down. (also posting this from Virgin - they're up for a change).

This is not cool. As a previous poster mentioned, I can live with the occasional disconnect or some slow throughput, but this just looks like Vodacom intentionally screwing over prepaid customers in order to keep their contract customers happy.

Not at all, contract and pre-paid are authenticated in different ways and this is why the one group is seeing problems and not the others.

As I posted higher up, earlier today, I expect the connect/disconnect problem only to be fully resolved once more upgrades are done. I know and understand the pain all this is causing (I really do) but the work is going as fast as possible.

Couldn't connect last night at all.
On Prepaid, Gordons Bay.

I've been reading this thread now for the last 10 days or so, because my connection was also going like a jo-jo the whole time.

Is Vodacom going to give their pained subscribers a boon or a bone for all this inconvenience? Just asking because I think they should try to make amends with their customers somehow.

Yeah, I'm also using GPRS w/ prepaid and it's been up and down (mostly down) for about 6-8 weeks now. Only reason I'm staying with Voda for a bit longer is because of v3g, it really makes a difference knowing they're working their asses off to get this mess sorted.

The Top Up people are in the same boat as prepaid unfortunately:(

Hi

Could not connect at all last night between 7pm and 12pm. Actualy needed to do some (online) work last night, but that contract is now down the drain (ie I lost about 6k of Income).

This is starting to get serious for me now.

While I tried to connect last night I got an error 31. When I phoned 155 and reported this, the friendly operator alleged that the error 31 is windows driver problem. He also alleged that my data card (one of those red ones you stick into your PCMIA slot) is faulty. I seriously doubt this as I was also not able to connect at all via my phone.

When I told him that I actualy got the data card from Vodacom, he said that they are the faulty ones and that I should get one from a 'reputable supplier' (This then implies that Vodacom is NOT a reputable supplier....) He also said that I need to update my drivers on my PC (for that I need to download a driver with a currently non-existant internet connection)

Ill try to get this going tonight. If I cant I will be switching to Cell-C tomorrow morning.

I currently have 5 reference numbers spread between the 11th and 22nd of August. I wonder if ill be able to use these to recover the R300+ that I have spend on this service in this month to date. I have used less than 100 of the 500mb in my bundle. V3G how do I go about doing this? (or is VC going to leave us without compensation for this?)

Regards

Just picked up the SMS's on my prepaid SIM after logging a fault last night.

9:00 AM - Dear customer, kindly note that the connectivity and internet browsing problem experienced is currently in attendance with our network engineers. We will advise soonest once a resolution has been achieved. We thank you for your patience. Kind regards, Vodacom Customer Care (Sharief Levy)

I feel the pain of the people sitting with unused bundles and work that needs doing in the evenings. I too had to give up my plans for the evening and instead wasted 2 hours on getting a ref # out of 155.

PS: @V3G how is your plan coming along to let the rest of the Vodacom client base know what's going on?

619 error again but only in Table View/Blouberg

I can connect and surf all day in the CBD but for the last two days every time I try to connect at home I get a 619 error. The coverage isn't great there but I can still get a 3G signal most of the time. Well, that was until this 619 error started on tuesday evening. Any help would be appreciated.

So tonight I still can't connect to either internet or internetvpn, but I can connect to unrestricted. I never tried unrestricted last night. Might have saved me a call to 155.
