Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

Any idea what's going on V3G??? 3G signal drops so much its essentially unusable and GPRS is so slow and constantly times out!

This is a known problem in the Gauteng area. The systems won't accept all the connections, symptom that you're not able to connect. The guys are busy attending.

Don't what's going on :confused: :confused: Maybe someone installed something on Friday the 13th?? From about then, problems are just popping up everywhere.

Hopefully it will be sorted out soon - I haven't been able to connect with VC at all since last night - using my VM.
 
Seem to be much improved this morning in Stellenbosch central (now 06h30 Saturday 21). Speed test revealed 366 down and 52 up. At least the down part is better now. Pinging www.telkom.co.za several times revealed an average time 500ms, no losses. Some overseas sites timed out a few times though. Other local sites between 320ms and 600ms.

I think there is something wrong with the vodacom server or the pipe to that server. That speedtest still gives me 122 kbits/sec for download. But the Sentech one just gave 350 kbits/sec.

Web pages definitely load faster now.

With regards to the time-outs on the pings I saw during the week, yesterday at work I saw similar behavior on the ADSL line at work. Maybe the issue is then on SAIX somewhere?
 
Had a DNS problem when I tried to connect this morning, nothing was resolving at all, using OpenDNS servers now and that seems to have solved the problem, still getting disconnected and losing signal every now and then but its definitely better than it was before, no speed problems either.

I got 371 kb/s on the Vodacom speed test now, on standard 3G so pretty close to the max.
 
Definitely better, still getting disconnected every now and then but nothing like before, thanks V3G. :)
 
Now that the rest of SA is has woken up, things are getting a bit worse again. Had a disconnected / dropped line earlier (Two or three hourse after my previous posting). Reconnection attemps revealed the same problem with no data transfers possible. 4th attempt solved it, but I also got a PPP-link error once while trying to reconnect after the dropped line. Speedtest 370 / 55 @ 10h45 Stellenbosch central.

So it's primarily a connection problem, once you're connected, you're OK speed wise?

Don't you know which tower you're on? Or your exact physical location.

Anyone else also seeing this, have a look at the first post of this thread and send me the info, if you don't mind.

I'm experiencing basically the same problem, sometimes it won't connect at all or when it does there's no throughput, once I get a working connection speed etc is fine although every now and then the 3G signal inexplicably drops and then usually reappears a minute or so later, I don't actually get disconnected when this happens but obviously there's no throughput until it picks up the signal again. Definitely better than it was the last few days though but still the same problems, just less frequent.

Info:

Grahamstown, tower showing up on my phone is Sugar Loaf Hill 1/2, usually get either that or Settlers Hill from this location, presume my 3G signal's coming from there too.

Yes, Since this morning speed is much improved and websites seem to load quicker too. The 1st two weeks after having swiched to Vodacom for data the connection and speed were fantastic. I've had my Vodacom Prepaid data sim for three weeks now. In fact I got it a day or two after your new bundle rates were launched. Only this week it started giving the problems as desribed in previous posts.

Am in Bergvliet Cape Town... 3G Signal is available but no pages loading, working around 5kBps =/- :(

Dunno about Rondebosch CT still no, signal available there at all...
 
My problems are specifically related to connection stability and getting the connection once made to send and receive data. It’s as if the line is just dead/inactive. Speed is great once a "live" connection is established. Once a good connection is lost however, it’s difficult to reconnect with a "live" connection. Very strange indeed. Neither my MTN nor Virgin sims did this. The Vodacom one was perfect for the 1st two weeks also. Hope this helps. Time is now 19h07, Saturday 21.
