Vox Telecom Fatpipe

I'm fairly new to ADSL and have been with Afrihost for almost 4 months. I signed up for the 100GB Fatpipe that's on special. So far so good, general browsing works well, download speeds are good and streaming videos is excellent. I don't play games online, so I can't comment on that. Everything seems to slow down between 6:00pm and 9:00pm, but I experienced that with Afrihost, Webafrica and Axxess as well. It's probably because the network is busiest during that time.

While I was with Afrihost, I never knew that a 4MB line can be this good!

Hi there.

Download the following tool: WinMTR

When you notice these issues please run the tool and use bbc.co.uk, mybroadband.co.za, google.com etc as hosts and run for 30 seconds or more.

This will give you a clear view of the path your data takes and on which hop latency could potentially be creeping in as well as showing any packetloss (if any).

Feel free to post the results here and we can also take a look for you.

I have absolutely 0 issues. I was on AH which was great till about 2 months ago, then switched to WA and I thought WOW this is SO much better than AH...and then (only cuz I'm a discount whore :D) I got the VOX fatpipe account...and yet again I thought WOW this is sooo much better than WA.

Activity AH WA VOX
Gaming (pings) sucks great super
Torrents meh ok super
Streaming LOL great super

Hello,

Can anyone tell me how the gaming is on the Vox account and the latency, possibly on the South?

Thanks ^^.

Well now! Thanks for the info. I'm also a discount whore xD

Will be signing up on the 24th. Keeping MWEB for e-mail etc. If I want to move my line, I am looking at +/- 60days downtime.
Is there an option for Mweb to keep my line?

I was told, they would release it back to Telkom. There would only be downtime if I transfer from Telkom to another isp.

Is there anyway to get a test of the Vox network? And can you buy more than one package a month say to have 3 or 4 such accounts?

No test accounts and yes, more than one account permitted per user.

MyBB community has done the testing already. As stated over and over again product performs as a capped account should.

Since my speed comparison on VOX was deleted from the AH thread (apparently I am not allowed to post speedtests running on my FatPipe account to compare it with Afrigreen accounts) - but here are the results on my 20mbps VDSL VOX account:

Downloads and streaming is perfect. Playing Destiny on PS4 is lag free and can not be compared with anything I ever experienced. I find the Speedtest of Capetown (I am in Jozi) compared to London a bit puzzling (I would have expected faster ping to CTN).

I'm accepting the offer ;)

Have been having trouble streaming with WA the last couple of weeks and decided to get a fatpipe account, being discounted. For the most part it works well, but streaming is no better than WA at the moment.

If someone can spot a problem within these WinMTR results (to google.com), please let me know:

If you have streaming issues on both WA and VOX, the issue is not the ISP.

That said, in your MTR, the very 1st hop spikes to 103ms, which is your DSL router. Are you doing streaming over wifi or physical cable at home? If wifi, thats probably where your problem is with streaming. Try with a physical cable and see if that helps.

Can you run another WinMTR to 155.239.255.250 and post the results here.

Thanks for the reply,

I see what you mean, but the machine doing the streaming is connected to router by cable, also the average is quite low and al sent are actually received. It's a small HP microserver though, running the latest Kodi on Windows 7. I wonder if it could be that the machine is struggling to keep up?

The only other thing that I see on all the other "hops" there is some packet loss. Is the 10%, 11%, 15% significant?

Many thanks

I ran it for about a minute, after 13 seconds packets were being lost to the second host.

Your exchange is dropping packets there. Unlikely that it is exchange congestion as your latency is fine. Give telkom a call and ask them to reset your port and test again, if it's still dropping packets after the port reset, Log a fault for packet loss starting at the exchange.

Awesome, thanks very much, doing that now.

Noticing that initial "lag" in throughput on Fat Pipe. Setup a QoS rule to "burst" to full speed for 5 seconds and half bandwidth every 60 seconds thereafter and noticed that it takes 3.4 seconds for the connection to actually reach its peak. On an Axxess capped account it takes a fraction of a second.

Then I started noticing it when loading image heavy pages, streaming music (continously) and browsing reddit.

While this can be seen as a small inconvenience, it's actually interesting to wonder why this happens. And it's getting more noticeable as I continue using this account.

Yes this is weird hey - only on Fatpipe... restested for support guy last night - also ran WinMTR and found interesting latency issue on hop #3 - see below
