Vox Telecom uncapped ADSL: Undercuts MWEB!

ProAsm is @lantic any good? speed and service wise

I've been with @lantic for 8 years and I'd rate them a solid average. Had some good support and some bad support. Except the Pretoria North branch. The guy there threatened to beat me up the one time.

Received this in my mail today as I am with Lantic
The part that gets me is I choose the 512 line uncapped but where does the "Free 1 Gig" data fit into the picture
http://www.proasm.com/images/pics/ltic.jpg

I got that too lol. I think their marketing ppl copied and pasted from the data bundle graphic just above :D

Hey Proasm, how're you doing? I still remember you from the UT days :)

Weird that there's been no discussion about their network. How are they managing it in terms of shaping? Who are their providers for this service? MWeb has clarified everything so far, I'd feel at ease with their offering, but knowing uncapped accounts in SA I wouldn't buy any other uncapped account as easily. The reality is that most ISP's can't actually afford to offer uncapped this cheap and actually provide decent amounts of bandwidth for it.

Agreed!

Very true, but lets see what Afrihost has in store tomorrow...I'm sure they won't disappoint

Whether they disappoint or not I'll try out their uncapped for the rest of this month seeing as I'm with them at the moment, and if MWeb still looks better then I'll move. I have a feeling MWeb's new network and huge amounts of cash are going to make for a better service though.

I think MWeb's uncapped announcement caught everyone off-guard. They had to rush to get this offer out and their website is still showing the old packages as well.

I think this just shows how we were being ripped off all this time.

It also shows that uncapped networks will have to be quite heavily shaped during the daytime, because it's obviously not suddenly costing every ISP less than what they paid for 10Gb to give us uncapped. The wholesale market has also changed, ISPs literally couldn't give us uncapped at this price before. And the level of shaping depends on how much bandwidth the ISP can afford for its uncapped product. MWeb or Telkom should win here simply because they have the most money, but we'll only know in a few months when the services are at their correct capacity.

Quite true. But I still believe we were being ripped off.

Yeah, I've been with them since dot as they bought out Stormnet who bought out Club Internet who I joined in the early 90's :)
There support SUCKS a bit in that weekends you are dumped if anything goes wrong.
Also there account goes from the 21st to the 20th of each month and keeping track of you data usage is very difficult as you hit you cap on the 18th or so when SAIX or any data monitoring program show from the beginning to the end of the month so it screws all logic.
It was for this reason alone that I was about to switch to Afrihost next month but now with an uncapped offering I probably will stay unless Afrihost are really much better.

@ Valis, yeah hi m8, I remember you from UT also and yeah, getting on a bit now, retired in April 2008 and am enjoying it, sitting in my rocking chair and watching the world go by :D

Doesn't @lantic have a reputation for being offline many times?
I have heard of people complaining about this

Thought it might be worth a mention that I just got off the phone with Vox DataPro, and their uncapped 4096 package is R889, but this EXCLUDES line rental. Weird, seeing as @lantic's R889 package is inclusive.

You need to clarify, be explicit - are you talking about voice line rental (which can only and must be paid directly to Telkom), or ADSL line rental? They are 2 distinct items. Some people just somme talk about "line rental" and then no-one is sure which one you are referring to. Especially if you're a noob.

Ah yes, I might have been a bit vague there, sorry.

DataPro's 4096 uncapped package is data-only for R889. @lantic's package (also R889) includes the ADSL line portion (valued at R413p/m). Neither ISP's include the actual analogue voice line rental as, like you said, it can only be supplied directly from Telkom.

What I was getting at though, is that I find it interesting that both companies (both part of the Vox group) are essentially offering identical accounts with prices that seemed to be identical at first, until you read the fine print. I guess they can charge what they like, but I would have thought if they're supposed to be on the same team, then they wouldnt compete with each other like that..

Maybe it's not the same product? Perhaps @lantic is shaped and the vox/datapro branded one isn't. I know lantic is supposed to be their "consumer" arm - so more for home users, I guess. Whereas vox/datapro would be for business users/power users, maybe?

In the many years I've been with them, I think I've had about 5 dropouts.
If its over the weekend, you buggered, have to wait till Monday otherwise its just a phone call and they fix it while you are on the line and make out they had no problem in the first place :)
