Weak iPhone 5 demand has Apple cut LCD panel orders

I have had my iPhone 5 from day two of the SA release and it works perfect, so no idea what the 'dud' talk is about. Battery life is kicking my Samsung S3's butt.

Battery life wasnt what I had hoped it to be initially, especially after comparing it with my mother's iPhone 5, but after I reloaded 6.0.2 it improved dramatically.

Bloomberg reported that the reports of iPhone5 parts orders dropping had caused AAPL stock to drop; they didn't confirm the reduction:

In fact they questioned the validity of the report based on their own investigation:
BOCI Research Ltd. analyst Tony Yang in Hong Kong said checks with Apple suppliers failed to produce any signs of “a huge iPhone 5 shipment drop.” Barclays Plc analyst Jones Ku also said there were no indications of a large order cut for speakers made by Shenzhen, China-based AAC.
“The actual order cut for iPhone 5s in the first quarter is exaggerated,” Ku said in Hong Kong. “The large cut for displays is mainly due to the over-purchase of displays in the fourth quarter.”

Apple aren't in a legal position actually to comment on these reports, but Phil Schiller came on record to rubbish the idea that they would need to produce a lower cost iPhone model to compete with low cost Android phones.

In what world did Apple expect to order components for 65 million iPhone 5 handsets in the seasonally soft March quarter?

Perhaps the weirdness of the math is why the current version of the WSJ article no longer cites the 65 million unit figure. Sometime between Sunday at 8:00 p.m. EST and Monday at 7:00 a.m., the Journal decided to drop the number from its article. But if the 65 million number is not right, is the estimate for halving March orders correct?

I cannot recommend the iPhone 5 to anyone with a clear conscience. If it must be Apple then wait for the next one, or get the super reliable 4S.

Reloaded? Did you setup as new device or restore from backup? I'm assuming the former.

Some folk claim to be getting better battery life on 6.0.1

There's 6.0.2 for iOS. :o Ok, I admit I haven't updated any of my devices to 6 even. I need to update my 3rd gen iPad, the 3GS is staying on 5 because I'm going dual SIM cheap chinese android to save on call costs.

The contract price is not bad but the cash price is ridiculous.

I have noticed two types of people who bring up the cash price. Firstly is the non-Apple crowd that says the cash price for the iPhone is too much (which I agree with) and secondly it is the iPhone users who bring up the price to make themselves feel special because they spent so much money on a phone.

The contract price on CellC is fantastic value actually - not just 'not bad'. It puts the phone in completely reasonable pricing territory against any other phone in the country.

Don't know about feeling special, but I do know that people will bring up original prices when they want to sell them. Keeping the high price "out there" raise the price you can sell it at.
 
Rumors further depressing Apple's stock price before they announce their biggest ever quarter next week? There's a shock.

The real question is whether the WSJ are complicit or just incompetent.

I was lazy - I restored it from my iPad backup. :o By evening I was forced to plug it in where as now I'm around 40% when I hit the sack.

Seeing they released the 'cheap iPhone' report the previous week from 'reliable sources', my guess is the latter. The big flag for me was the 65million number; who believed Apple ordered 65million screens for March??

I need to do this, 6.0.1 is chowing my battery, only lasting from 6am till about 5pm.

Well firstly a lot of those facts quoted just aren't correct; or at least, highly disputable. So what am I to say; post some random blog and how can I still have doubt?

In South Africa at least it's almost totally out of stock, which doesn't say much internationally but it shows that there is demand for it here. In the US iPhone marketshare supposedly topped 50% recently, again contradicting those reports directly. So my response is as it has been, just wait till figures come out in a week and we'll see.

I'm not even really bothered about it. If iPhone slips in the market and Android takes ascendancy so be it, that's fine. I am bothered about the amount of unattributable 'my source says' rumourmongering that passes as Apple reportage.
