Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

That's exactly my problem. Even if they just bring back their gaming servers as unmonitored. Some games, taking Minecraft as an example, can run (on render distance=max) 100-150MB/hour, which would quickly screw people over with the 1.58GB that they have during the 6am-midnight windows.

Yeah.

I'm just hoping those e-mails are in error. The idea of terminating an uncapped user's service because they "used too much" is a bit too "3GB is all anyone who legitimately uses the internet needs" (Telkom) for me.

If someone bypasses the shaping protocols then sure, go nuts, terminate their service. If someone just uses your product? Worrying.

Well as WAJeff said, someone screwed up the subject headers... but yes, I hope you are right.

Please note that continued or excessive abuse of our service may result in service termination, in terms of our Home Uncapped Acceptable Usage Policy

From what I gather, being throttled = abuse. Staying throttled = excessive abuse.

I would like clarification on this, personally.

I've done 127GB so far this month (which is pretty normal for me, I average around 120GB per month depending on any new Steam purchases :p). I haven't received an e-mail like that yet so I'm not too fussed about it affecting me since it seems my usage is "okay."

Just curious, really.

Mostly I think that saying something like that is really bad PR. It's likely to scare off anyone who still thinks 10GB is "a lot" and 20GB is "excessive" :)

just to query from the guys using the webafrica uncapped. What is your gaming like at the moment? latency to international servers? i mostly just play lol & Dc online and if it can be under 300ms unlike Telkom uncapped which often has me at over 400ms(not sure why cos ive checked everything and there are no downloads or anything else using internet except lol, some days its good at around 250ms, other days over 400ms.)

Also i dont do much downloading, my dad mostly browses youtube for bike vids/ways to fix bikes or mostly stuff to do with racing/bikes. ive used around 80gb this month so they surely cant be shaping me when thats quite a small amount of usage.

LoL .... 208ms and I'm in Pretoria. It should be around 160-170ms if you're in Cape Town.

i get 180ms or less on LOL

He also said that it's an heads up.

Hi guys,
For those that received emails, the subject header was incorrect from our end. Was supposed to be more along the lines of a heads up, definitely not a cancellation.

I currently use anything from 50 gig up too 100-200 GB p/m. So it be interesting to know (if we are going to know) what excessive is. My surfing just alone is 3-5 gig, Seriously don't see how any sane person could think 10GB is "a lot" and 20 GB is "excessive". Been 3 days now since that reply and no official response explaining anything leaving you guys high and dry...

you bugger in CPT :p, always get better latency there, - Thanks for the reply tho guys, good to see even with many complaints the gaming is still pretty good, how much data have you used this month so far? I think with a capped account i have had 190ms on LOL with WA but moved last year december, currently on the Telkom free promotion, but no ways am i going to keep it after 3 month, R800 a month and alot of the time im sitting on 400ms, NO CHANCE! ill probably land up going with WA cos its not like 100gb's a month is exessive usage and i shouldnt get throttled much unless like a few have said (buy a game or 2 on steam and download them at 10gb each - definitely gonna hit the throttle there which sucks but better than paying ridiculous amounts for OW gold)

I don't either but there are people who do and ISPs that perpetuate the bollocks that it is.

Eh well... c'est la vie.

Anyone else having Gmail's SMTP server timeout on WebAfrica tonight?

Edit: Changed SMTP server from googlemail.com to gmail.com and changed port from 25 to 587.

Weeeiiiird.

Are you still experiencing intermittent issues this morning?

@WAJeff. No response or clarification to the excessive usage questions and warning mails?

Hi guys,

We've had to start clamping down a little due to some users pushing through excessive usage on our Uncapped accounts. No ones accounts are getting terminated because of this email.

Had to change our SMTP (Hetzner) to 587 as well. Worked fine after that, but unsure whether it was a Hetzner or WA thing. Either way, all is good on 587.

To be honest I would like to know what is excessive:

Would it be doing 6-12 gig a night for whole month ?
Would it be downloading a steam game of 15G, then beta client of some MMO for another 10G and finally doing updates up too 5G ?
Would it be a whole day of downloading, but at 50% of line speed ?

My target usage is very much steam games, beta invites, HD streaming, weekly from 10pm to 5/6am and obviously sometimes during the day especially weekends. During the day is normally limited to 200/250KB since I like to play MMOs and other online games.

I'm no bandwidth whore, meaning 24.7 usage, but I do use my line when I use it. So my usage is anything from 50GB up too 200GB and sometimes 250GB a month.

What I find a bit confusing about this is that you have very strict / clear / prescriptive AUP / FUP's in place with 6 hour and 7 day rolling windows. Surely your systems should be throttling / prioritising / shaping / controlling your users when they exceed their windows so that they do not do "excessive" usage? As some people have noted these thresholds are by now means high (if anything they are very low).

Prophet's question is spot on - what is excessive?

Also when you started uncapped you spoke about these thresholds etc being a guide line and only implemented if there is a network capacity issue. I can only assume that if you are having to now email some people who are "excessive" users, and taking into account your thresholds, that you are having network capacity issues.

Whilst I would enjoy being on uncapped, these issues do concern me as to the cost benefit of my great priced capped account vs uncapped.

I have just cancelled my IS uncapped (openweb gold) which has been giving me issues. Going to try the WA uncapped and see how it goes. I'll adjust my download habits to conform to their download+ hours for the most part, and try it out for awhile. If it's worse, I'll just go back; if it's better, then awesome.

I suppose so. It's not frequent... Maybe once every 5-6 hours? I don't know.

Skype continues unhindered but Twitter, MyBB, etc (browsing, basically) dies for 20-odd seconds. It doesn't time out or anything, it just sort of takes a while. I'm not really sure how to describe it :o

I would love an official response on this but it seems that these types of questions are deliberately being left unanswered...

This sort of side stepping makes me reconsider moving to the so called "better" isp's
