I rebooted the PC and the modem this morning and things seem better. I'll keep an eye on it as I plan to just surf you tube this morning.
 
We're experiencing high call volumes at the moment relating to ADSL. Our Engineers are investigating.
 
Web Africa Network Issues - 2 March 2012

Hi all,

Firstly, I'd like to extend both my sincere apologies on both Web Africa and my personal behalf.
We experienced a network outage today which was caused by errors between our two primary core routers. As soon as this was picked up our Network Engineers where dispatched to our data centre to resolve and re-configure the issues at hand.

Unfortunately this also affected the Web Africa office connectivity, including our telephone systems. Our best effort where concentrated on our online platforms to keep everyone up to date.

Customers who are still experiencing issues with our network are urged to please contact our ADSL Department who will investigate any isolated issues.

eish billing is mess, ok i understand that debit order was sent though the bank, why the 4mps cost went off, and that they will refund me, because it downgraded a bit late.

but now on my account page it shows R250 for 1mps line, but the webpage shows you only pay R200 for the line with 1mps account.
 
I was definitely a little bit confused earlier today as I honestly meant to reply to this thread when I posted this, but somehow managed to put it in the "what is going on" thread instead. My fault for opening multiple threads discussing the same ISP!

I'm more satisfied though after reading more of the responses on the forum. I was worried at one stage that should I cross my threshold too much I might be getting in trouble a bit, but it seems that wasn't the case. (To quote Jeff, "We won't just cut you off for no good reason. If you're doing 1Tb a month we'll need to talk")

I am also getting decent speeds even while throttled. At the current moment I'm downloading at 23kbps.. which is slower than the 40kbps I was getting on a Home Pro 1gb account but fast enough for me to be happy. I wouldn't complain at any speed increase.. but I'm happy! I'll try figure out what speed I'm downloading at when not throttled, but I might need to wait awhile until some stage when I'm not actually throttled.. :P

I also realize that this a newer product offering that you guys have out there, and it may take some tweaking before it is perfect. I really hope you get it right though, as I do still love Web Africa for some reason or another and would really prefer to hang around. :)

A question for Jeff: is there any possible way to avoid shaping or throttling our gaming traffic from your side? Generally, such traffic is not that heavy. It is just a bit of a pain having to swap over to another internet account to get a decent ping on TF2 because I've been throttled. :)

Don't hold your breath waiting for a reply, I asked this very question a few times on the WA forums but didn't once receive a direct response...
 
I dont see that happening, if gaming was unshaped in uncapped then there would basically be no reason for unshaped accounts.

I might be a bit confused here, and I realize this is partially because of my bad choice of words in my previous post.. what I'm after is that we can make gaming traffic exempt from the speed decrease you receive from being over your threshold. Not necessarily an unshaped package.

I'm sure I was on "shaped" internet when I was paying for 3gb a month in the past, and I got a ping of around 80 to 120 playing Team Fortress 2. I seem to get a ping of 300 while playing on my uncapped, although I am throttled due to being over the threshold at the time. Basically looking for the same 80 to 120 ping, even while throttled. I might be asking for far to much here, but it would be nice.)

Are you on a 384k line or why is the half speed a problem for games?
 
Is everyone else getting uber slow speeds? I'm over my 6 hour limit, but not over 7 day. I'm getting 20-40kb/s for 1 meg line..

I'm on a 384 line. I always have been, capped and uncapped. I'm looking forward to the day I can afford a faster line!

After last night, I am rather happy with this uncapped package. I downloaded pretty much all day, and I've gone over both my 6 hour and my 7 day threshold already. Speeds for downloads during the day are pretty much around 23kbps once past the threshold. I decided to have a few rounds of Team Fortress 2 with a friend last night, and thought I'll just take a look at my ping before I swap accounts.

I was getting a good ping of about 100+- all night on my uncapped package. Very playable and I was able to have some great rounds!

I think that possibly then my experience with the 300ms might be related to something else that was on my network at the time, or just a general problem with WA that was fixed. I'll try test sometime today what the pings are during business hours.. but I'm happy either way. If I can get my downloads done, and still enjoy a good game in the evening, it is worth it for me. :)

Good job, WA... and apologies for doubting your gaming speeds. :D

It would make far more sense if they had a better threshold that looked at previous bandwidth habits over a period of time to allow one to make heavy use in short bursts on occasion.

But 40gb is nothing in today's world.

They should hit harder on p2p traffic, not http since it's mostly the p2p users who are the main bandwidth hogs IMO.

Having issues with SWTOR tonight. Can't play ping spikes the whole time. I think yay I am on 236ms and then I enter a fight and 1800ms-2000ms then suddenly back to 200ms-300ms. I am on 1mbps Home Uncapped. Should have never cancelled my Red Africa for this uncapped pos.

Which ISP offers the best value and provides stable bandwith for gaming. WA used to be the best but quality of service is going down the drain
