Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

Well I'll be testing at 1am tomorrow my uncapped account vs a provided by WA for testing account. Gotta love it when problems are only at really sucky times.

EDIT: WA must be the only company that contacts me telephonically from a web based support portal, +1 for service by WA.

Hi all,

Been reviewing a lot of things on our end, so been running between the Networking guys, Product Teams and the big boys.
Long story short, we provisioned for x amount of IPC capacity for our Home Uncapped launch. The sign-ups and upgrades where far from what we expected, even on extreme circumstances. Our network isn't maxing out by no means, but is very full - causing a general slow down.

The capacity upgrade that was planned for Monday fell through because of issues on Telkom's end. We've been told that the capacity is going to be allocated between 10pm tonight and 7am tomorrow. Once it's been allocated, we'll need to "pass this through" our systems - so a slight drop in traffic might be experienced at around 7am tomorrow morning.

Our CEO is busy with our Marketing guys to draft a letter to all our Uncapped customers, explaining what's happening in a bit more detail. I'll post that up as soon as a copy lands in my inbox :)

So delighted about this. If the load on the network lifts a little, this will literally be the perfect product. :D

Hi Jeff,
did not you as a company representative and your CEO stated three weeks ago that the capacity is more then enough for this particular service? How then, two weeks later the speed went down from 350-400kb to 50-60kb. What are you saying now, is that you, your marketing department and your boss did not see it coming! Now you are telling us that your CEO and marketing department are busy writhing an e-mails, explaining what happened? My problem with all due respect is, I don't want explanations why something that i paid for in front now is not working. Why no one told us what the problems are, before taking our money. Personally I paid for a service that is very far from I've been told by you and your marketing department is going to be. Are you going to do another marketing trick on us Jeff?

Love this feedback, thanks, WAJeff :)

Here's looking forward to tomorrow :p

Edit: Currently getting a max throughput of 10kB/s on my 4Mbps line. With Skype open (you can imagine the quality? :p)... And I'm unthrottled. That extra capacity really can't come soon enough.

You must be throttled dude no way :) or Skype is your problem. I'm not and I'm getting 60kb at the moment, after i haven't used WA account for two days. Isn't that a beauty Jeff?

Ironically, browsing is fine but no, Skype won't go higher than 10kB/s. And that's ONLY on WA. Problem is not with Skype, at all.

I'm at 0.43GB of my 3.16GB 6-hour threshold and at 12.01GB of my 7-day 44GB threshold.

So no, definitely not throttled at all.

I've just done a test with home uncapped in threshold vs test account webafrica gave (I think normal capped account).

1) Shoutcast 128kbps stream - streamed perfectly, home uncapped stuttered and wanted to buffer every few seconds.... unusable
2) NNTP Overseas Server 1 Thread - 50-200KB/s (generally around 100), home uncapped 0-1KB/s
3) Youtube, Both streamed faster than I played but the account you gave me to test with completed much quicker.
4) Second Life, HUGE DIFFERENCE, login took 25 seconds and textures loaded in about 1 minute, no red bar showing packet loss or high latency spikes, with home uncapped, login took 60 seconds (thats near timeout), red bar came up showing packet loss and spikes, textures were still loading after a few minutes, gave up

I was pulling your leg dude, sorry if you did not understand my black humor. I was kidding with Jeff and WA in total. I'm not throttled as well, funny my speed is higher. Whopping 55kb at the moment on 4Mb account. I hope you are going to get my speed as well, at least after the upgrade. In what week time :)

Oh... sorry...

/faceplam :o

What I find really amusing is that a Skyrim patch just came through at full speed (425kB/s) on Steam. Methinks their shapers might be to blame.

Skype is the most important thing I use my internet for and seeing it refuse to go faster than 10kB/s on a video call is just depressing...

I'm sure it'll get sorted. Have faith :p

Ja, I do have faith, till 20.12.11 after that i'm back to Axxess. What else i can do, i paid 600 bucks for a service that is rubbish. Of course i do have faith, that is the only thing left, is in it?

I just did some test. Torrent with 300 seeders and i'm getting 420kb TK account full line speed. After changing to WA account i can only see 16 seeders instead of 300 and my speed drops to 35kb. How that does it work? Any one dare to explain! I can understand shortage of bandwidth, shaping and all off this BS, but this is just too much.

I'm getting half line speeds on my downloads... +-15KB/s on a 384kbps line... :(

Yeah this is really funny, that some things are going full speed and others aren't. And some people are maxing their lines 24/7 and others are throttled to death. Seems like something is wrong with the shapers or something. If this can be fixed, then there will be more balance.

But, it seems like most companies that start with uncap have this problem in the beginning to get their shaping stuff in check. Hopefully, with WA it will be much quicker.

Currently getting 1KB/s on rapidshare. On WA website, they say there are no problems.

I dont understand this. Earlier in the day I was at half speed of 60KB/s. That was not ideal but ok.

Now this is pathetic. I logged a ticket yesterday and the feedback i got was :

"I have compiled your information and included it in a task that we have logged with our network engineers to further investigate this matter from their side."

It doesnt tell me when it is going to get fixed.

Plus I'm under the threshold and on a 1Mbps line.

I got this from support:
Thank you for your query.

Jeff has explained the issue in the post #107, http://forums.webafrica.co.za/showthread.php/6709-Web-Africa-Home-Uncapped-Feedback/page6.

This is the update on our network capacity, the issue you experiencing where you can not access 2 different protocol at the same time is linked to this.

But if by chance tomorrow at 7am (or this morning if you reading it on the 8th) please inform us that the issue is still persisting so that we can ask our network engineers to investigate the issue.

So things will hopefully be better by tomorrow...

Holding thumbs, can't wait to hear the feedback from those with this account.

Cool, maintenance all sorted, network is looking normal :)
I'll post up some confirmation once I know for certain that the additional capacity has been allocated successfully.

Just how much capacity are we talking here in percent
