Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

Hey guys,

Can we please have this info passed onto Support:

  • What exactly is slow?
  • Include a tracert to international and a local IP/ server/ website
  • Are you above or below your treshold?

Once the ADSL guys have this info from a few sources, it'll be escalated onto our Networking guys. We've also run a few tests from our end on some accounts, we aren't able to replicate the issues.

It Really gets bad in the Evenings and what gets me is we that are abiding by the rules are the ones that Dont have a stable service.

Same here, I went backwards and forwards with support for quite a while with the eventual answer being that the local capacity will be increasing tomorrow and international on Dec 15, until then they said there is nothing they can do.

WAJeff: My support ticket has basically all of what you asked and the results from giving it, I'll PM it to you. End result is "wait for more capacity" I have since responded since what results to "Just wait" isn't a cool answer.

I Have had an Home capped account which has worked wonders and recently switched it to an Uncapped.

My comments is not to discourge users from Using WebAfricas Service its more to let them know that that problem hasint been solved for everyone.

Well, right now everything is perfect.

Things that are slow/have issues:
  • YouTube/Vimeo/Gamespot/etc video streams become impossible (read: 10-40kB/s) at times.
  • Skype has occasionally dropped to less than 10kB/s during a video call (I monitor these things, 'cos I'm just totally weird like that) which is in no way conducive to a clear stream (or my sanity).
  • Last night I was having issues reaching pop.gmail.com port 995.
  • Occasional (bad) latency spikes when playing P2P (Terraria/MineCraft). Haven't tried an MMO (but will definitely give feedback when I hit Old Republic next week).

Apart from that, everything is perfect. When this account works, it's absolutely fantastic. Steam downloads have been great; the HTTPS issue seems to have been resolved.

Oh, and I'm still very much under my threshold (client RDB02, if you'd like to verify :p).

Thanks, WAJeff!

Could it be that sites like Skype and Youtube are being classed as P2P and throttled/shaped?

Could it be that sites like Skype and Youtube are being classed as P2P and throttled/shaped?

Well, Skype is meant to be classed as VOIP and given "High" priority, if I understood correctly.

Although it's entirely possible. I would just have assumed that as long as you're unthrottled that you have to endure as little shaping as possible.

Also You cant do any Pingtest to overseas Servers at night time.

A ping will only really suck if there's a really REALLY bad problem. Streams and games generally sit lower in priority than HTTP as well as being more affected by any from of latency or capacity problems so trace routes, pings etc... are only really useful for seeing it the traffic is taking the right route and that the servers functioning.

Any form of prioritization will not be reflected in a ping or trace route. One thing you would notice in speed tests is when the hours are good the graph that shows during the speed tests goes up and sits at the top speed whereas when its bad it looks jagged from the drop gain drop gain but the average is still high enough to make it a good speed test.

VOIP is supposed to sit on the highest priority on the home uncapped, I dont know how skype would fit in though since I dont know where it falls as VOIP being voice...

Edit:
BossertGF +1 on that issue too. If you try streaming audio it will probably start to stutter late evening and then fail altogether after midnight.

Just an update on from my side.

Today, more specifically this afternoon I'm getting full speed again. I just got home and I tried out the line. So they must have fixed something.

I'm holding my fingers crossed that it stays like this in the evening and the rest of the month.

+1 Webafrica

A bit of feedback currently.

I am nowhere near being throttled and decided to d/load some arb. torrent and getting between 280 - 380 kB/s (seeds 7(12), Peers 1(19)). So no problems here in my part of the world (Garsfontein, Pretoria).

I'm at work, hopefully when I get home I can share the joy. But when I left at around 3pm it was seriously slow (100KBps average with bursts up to 200KBps).

Just got my account like an hour ago and it seems ok so far. News server downloads are flying. Hope it stays this way.

Tests from now - In threshold
==============================================
Streaming Audio - Fine
News International 10 threads - Fullspeed
Youtube 720p Avatar HD Trailer - Loads faster than can play
TestMy.net Download Speedtest - 1.5mbps
TestMy.net Upload Speedtest - 0.310mbps
SpeedTest.Net to London - 1.5mbps
SpeedTEst.Net to Durban = 3.6mbps
==============================================

WAJeff
The network engineers were very adamant that local will be fine now and international fine after the upgrade on the 15'th I basically cant get anything more out of support.

Looks like they are trying to sell a PC fixer/scanner on that link.
If you feel like your computer isn't running right you may want to run a PC Speed Test or a Registry Error Test. Scanning is free but the software does require a small download. (Microsoft Certified Software)
Be alert !!
