Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

Come midnight my services go to ****, gaming and streaming other than youtube (I tested using vimeo). Support ticket logged to webafrica below...

Hello

For the past few days now come midnight my latency's go through the roof.

Star wars the old republic goes along happily at 200-230ms then as soon as midnight hits I get 800-13000ms latency, every single time.

In the game second life I start experiencing 10-15% packet loss and latency climbs by about 400ms. Logging in increases from 20 seconds to 40seconds and sometimes just time

Videos on vimeo cannot play for longer than 3 seconds without having to buffer for more than that. (pre midnight it is smooth as silk).

Youtube works fine.

I've mentioned this problem before and the answer was "When the capacity gets upgraded it will be fine". I cant see it as a network load thing because its as soon as I get switched over to free for all that it happens. I log on with afrihost prepaid and everything is smooth.

Its unnaceptable having a service that works great 18 hours a day.

@ KinsZA -- I know how you feel.

I decided to take a short video of what I experience every single evening after midnight:

Pay attention to how many times the latency spikes in JUST 30-seconds. Completely unplayable but hey, at least it's not freezing solidly any more

Apparently this is a known issue according to support response and is being looked into, I kinda wonder how long its been being looked into.

It's sad that we have to result to videos to explain our problems

EDIT: What I do find fishy is youtube was perfect, yet it looks like its the exception, it happens at exactly midnight. I thought data supposed to just "not count", not have all the rules change so that the experience goes to ****

Recently signed up for Web Africa's 4mb uncapped home option. Web Africa's service has been amazing, unfortunately it seems I have fallen victim to Telkom's uselessness :\

98% of the time that i have had the line so far (granted only since around the 18th December) I have had speeds of between 0.10mbps and 1mbps (constantly changes), with an average latency of 80-100ms. I have contacted WA a few times, and they have been fantastically helpful, however it seems that the DSLAM/exchange in my area is overloaded (douglasdale), and I now have to wait for Telkom to upgrade it, which may take a week or more. Apparently this particular exchange has been overloaded for some time now, but telkom waited until there were enough complaints before deciding to actually do anything about it.

As soon as that debacle gets sorted, I'll put up my thoughts on the service. Unfortunately at this time, if it is not sorted by the end of Jan, I will be forced to cancel, as it is simply senseless to pay R900 a month for a service I am not getting.

Known issue... lol

It's classic shaping.

I don't have this known issue with TOR and mweb. It's then a exclusive issue to WAU.

Seems shaper/network is confused.

I mean as far as webafrica's made it out to be the service is meant to be the same after midnight aside from the downloading not counting, not throwing in a whole pile of extra rules that ruin things.

I mean rules are supposed to go that the in threshold people are supposed to have priority regardless after after midnight and SURELY the network can handle that.

Well if this problem occurs at the stroke of midnight, and WA have a policy that kicks in at the same time, then look no further. Perhaps everyone is jumping on at that time and once again the capacity is under strain.

One of the side effects of download+ ?

I'm dead certain it is, its a very far from acceptable side effect.

Hey guys,

Our engineers are hard at work having a look at the issues were higher latency is experiencing after midnight. I'll have feedback as soon as it arrives in my inbox.

:wtf:
Sorry... fixed!

Hi

Do we have any idea how long this is going to take, I mean the after midnight thing was first brought to attention last year by Lycanthrope, Myself and Others.

It kinda sucks to switch to a prepaid account after midnight when you have an uncapped one.

Edit: @WAJeff I know you'll let us know as soon as you know but it sounds like they are seriously dragging their feet in letting you know (eg in the past I got told the only solution was extra capacity then the next day you get the mail to tell us).

Yes I feel like a **** hassling like this but when something crops up again that was supposed to be fixed and "we're working on it" lasts for days...

I don't have an ETA, but hopefully by tonight things should be sorted out.
Between our Engineering and Networking guys - they're working together and running some tests.

hmmm anybody getting slowish downloads?

first time on wa i ever got slow downloads, think its time for a router restart :P

Haven't downloaded anything all day. But my Skype quality has been rubbish (10-14kB/s as opposed to 140-150kB/s). It's blurred as hell, noisy and basically shyte.

Latency in Old Republic (up until now) has been perfect. I'll have to see how it is past midnight.
