Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

hmmm seems dl+ hours was not good :(

but as soon 7am this morning downloads went up again, must be bandwitdh issue , or maybe they testing new shaping rules?

@hereticangel

The thing is no change of rules was mentioned to us just that bandwidth wont count, now its kinda obvious that there are rules and shoddy ones at that kicking in since everything really goes unstable. Lycanthrope do yourself a favor and try stream a music video from vimeo instead of youtube and you'll see the problem goes beyond gaming :)

Can WA at least confirm what gets done come midnight, there is no way in hell something just happens to die midnight on the dot and come fine 6am every single day without there being some sort of rule in place.

EDIT: @WA Idea - If there are rules regarding ports themselves why not open up to submission of used ports for gaming, streaming etc to add to list of non shaped ports ?

I'll have a chat to the Networking guys to see what's going on. I know they're aware of it, not sure why it isn't fixed yet.

I know but I care more about online gaming than video streaming :p I have an account with Megavideo that runs at full-speed any time of the day but during DL+ hours. Thing is, I can always just download a video stream and wait it out. The same doesn't really apply to latency :p

I clock 250-265ms, not bad for uncapped it's ok.

I get a stable 200-230ms in TOR. Best latency I've ever had. Problem is that come midnight that goes to hell :)

So many reports of a problem that is a serious one at that thats been going on for days now and the only news anyone has is...

"Our engineers are working on it"

I mean I'm no network technician I abandoned that for programming but seriously what process of problem solving do you have to go through ?

1) How much capacity do we have - That will be known.
2) How much load does our network go under from 06:00-18:00, 18:00-00:00 and 00:00 to 06:00

If 1 is a lot larger than two then switch off and rules and see how things go (we're being messed around every night so if **** hits the fan rules can either be switched on or the system even left !)

If capacity will not be enough its time to prioritise, lets research what ports are used by applications that we can afford to let run (web, mail, streaming video/audio, games) right bunch those up and push them to the top group everything else and leave it. Games and different service are sure to be missed that are less used but sure lets go through support tickets and see or ask.

Ok right we sit with the in and out of threshold people now what do we do... ok lets put the in threshold non high usage at the top, followed by out of threshold then in threshold everything else then out of threshold everything else. (1,2,1,2) really in priorities.

The theory is as simple as that, parsing through logs and finding out the stats is also simple, all thats left is technical implementation.

Now when you look at finding out a answer to the problem easily and it just sounds like an advanced quality of service setup which I'm sure technicians can handle yet it takes this long it makes you think that somethings really bad and we're just being given the cold shoulder.

So now you sit with what should go where in the case of too high load and how things should be in the case of not high load. If that's what is being done and its still not working tell us that they are working on a system that will give the best experience for crying out loud not just some vague generic "shut them up" answer.

I'm dead sure webafrica wouldn't hire morons as staff but I feel like I'm being treated like a moron when I get told "we're working on it". It's like a store saying "we're out of stock", a professional sports player saying its "just a light injury" (how often do those go on for months).

If we're going to be stuffed around at least give us a better answer, some of us here stuck through things when everything sucked all the time while waiting for capacity, teething problems etc... and we're still here even though its the only isp with time based thresholds, the second most expensive of the home based high end providers people are still here.

WAJeff I know you give us what you can when you can but I for one am tired of being in the dark, tired of having support tickets just sit open for ages with stall tactic style answers. I am sure that you are tired of not having information to give us as you are basically the face of Webafrica in my opinion.

If Webafrica cant give us 24 hour good service at least give us answers that those who are more savvy can understand and explain to those who are not.

What I'd like to know is why it affects some of us and not others, why this hadn't been picked up on back during the capacity issues in early December when the first concerns were aired.

After the capacity upgrade all problems went away. Does this mean it's a capacity issue again? It's kind of convenient for it to simply be coincidental that these problems emerged after the first of January. How long will we endure it before another upgrade happens?

If this is a problem outside of WA's control, then why is this problem exclusive to WA?

All-in-all, it could be worse: it could be happening 24/7 as opposed to just six hours of the day. It's just a shame that I tend to be up at those times :)

WA are under the CPA laws. I suggest a whole lot of you take them to task.

WA has been supportive in every situation, why bring CPA into the discussion. that wont solve anything?

+1

If they were ignoring the issue then it would be something to consider but as it is, that's just a ridiculous extreme that would be of no help to anyone.

Sorry, Lounger, but that suggestion of yours was ridiculous at best.

Since I have quit online gaming for a while I can only comment on dowloads and I am hitting 400kB/s atm. Web pages opened without my hassle although it was a bit slower earlier in the afternoon.

So still a thumbs up as far as my needs go.

edit: oh and I am also streaming 480p Dakar highlights on youtube as well.

I mentioned this problem on I think the 3'rd or 6th of december and it was talked about in these forums so why it wasnt addressed who knows.

I remember making a prediction that the next bandwidth hit would come on 1st of Jan (All the people who had to give their months notice with mweb or openweb). I hope it is not so and Webafrica is trying to urgently get bandwidth, but who knows because we dont get told a thing.

@Jase This is only a 00:00-06:00 problem, any other hour its perfect. Try watching again in say 3 hours time.

Downloads are a bad indicator unless its just a simple save from a website. A news server you use multiple connections likewise with torrent or even normal http with a download manager, if one of them fluctuates for a second or so chances are it will pick back up before the program even notices. If the news server is webafrica, then its local traffic so I wouldnt be surprised at getting full speed on few connections.

If you want to do a true after hours test set your news (if international) to use 1 connection and test before midnight then test again after.

If you want to test video, youtube will probably be the streamer that gives you the least problems as I've noticed that it's always the least affected during bandwidth problems (willing to bet there's some measures to improve speeds and lessen international load), so test using vimeo or something live streaming. Speedtest.net is the huge villain for me when it comes to "my internets fine" take a look at that graph running in the background, if it looks very jagged then your connections not of a good quality at all even if end result is full speed.

So all in all, after midnight only and avoid the services that would be given priority to keep the peace so to speak.

Well if guys are reporting problems for weeks and WA is just having "chats" about it, then clearly they need a fire to be lit under their backsides and the CPA is there.

Exactly why I didn't jump ship yet and set Jan as watch and see what happens when "kids returns and leech". I'd still wonder if the problem would be less of an issue of certain hours downloading wasn't 'enforced', I'd place my bet on that, it's load issue mixed with too complex shaping and traffic rules.

Maybe Feb should also be placed into watch and see bracket for WAU.

...as I've said it took one myb article to get mweb for the most of it sorted out, maybe It's WAU turn for a nice "Webafrica uncapped plagued with problems after twilight hour" article ?

Chatting is much more relaxed than taking an ISP to task right? ISPA / ICASA / ASA / Myb - there's quite a few places to complain and raise awareness at.

I'm actually surprised how composed this forum thread has been considering this uncapped packages track record. (rough working in weeks but it gets the trend across)

1 - Pre-December service goes up, service is awesome, everyones happy.
2 - Less than two weeks after launch customers are waiting due to underestimated subscriptions.
3 - One capacity upgrade is done two weeks into december things get better but this midnight problem prevails.
4 - 3 weeks into december the second upgrade hits, all problems go away.
5 - 2 Weeks of awesome service follow through last week of 2011 and first week of 2012
6 - Things go pear again and currently we wait.

So lets see, 3 weeks of a fully working service 3 weeks of partial service. So its basically two invoices later and not even 1 invoices worth of how the service should work... in total.

I predict ship jumping end of Feb if the current trend persists.

I've used pretty much every uncapped product in ZA ranging from MWEB to OpenWeb Gold (Vodacom Business, Altech, Internet Solutions, etc) and some dodgier ones including Afrihost when it first launched (what an insult to uncapped internet that is from an otherwise great company).

WebAfrica is by far the best. They have their hiccups, but their uncapped service is also only a month and a half old. Steam downloads are perfect, streaming is great (not perfect, but I'll settle for great) and their international latency is by far the best I've come across. Most of all, outside of DL+ hours, it's reliable.

Their support and user control panel is also world-class, professional and most of all, works.

I'm certainly frustrated by the hiccups, but I've been on every single backbone in the country, they ALL have hiccups. WA's are considerably fewer and far more tolerable.

The only other one that compared (to me, at least) was IS on OpenWeb Gold which ran at half-speed during the day and at night was full-speed. The half-speed thing pissed me off and the latency was ****.

The fact is that with Telkom's pitiful infrastructure, there's unlikely to be a "perfect" uncapped solution any time soon. Full LLU is necessary, stuff like this is just a stark reminder of how far we are from ever getting close to what the rest of the world takes for granted.

I remain envious of my SO's 10Mb uncapped access in Denmark :(

The fault isn't WA's though. I get the feeling that they genuinely are interested in helping and maintaining a high standard of internet access. Which is a helluva lot more that I can say about many other companies.

Just give it time. If the account was falling apart at the seams I'd be more upset, but then I also would've just switched back to OpenWeb (many customers of whom are using resold WA accounts via "DSL Haven" or whatever it was called, from what I've heard).

I only wish I had more transparency from them and knew exactly what they were investigating, what their suspicions are, etc.
