Web Squad ISP

@websquadza I'm quite interested in how you guys are going to be dealing with this nonsense: https://mybroadband.co.za/news/internet/303638-how-south-african-isps-will-deal-with-pirates.html

I reckon the bill in it's current form won't pass.. so we'll wait for a more final version. Not sure how they expect us to enforce this and 72h is ridiculous - that means ISPs will have to spend all day policing. But in all honesty, our users' privacy is more important to us than anything, and nothing in the bill compels us to track client traffic - so we simply won't. How the bill deals with infringement notices, we'll see. But this in reality smacks of a poor understanding of the industry and heavy lobbying by Rights holders.

Hi @websquadza, just wanted to ask some questions. I am currently with another ISP and considering moving my account over to you guys.

1.) with your 1 gigabit account on Vumatel what is the international speed on this account. I know the 1Gbps is for local but what will the line speed be to Europe?
2.) With a speed of 200/200 on your network to Europe what speed can I expect to get in real terms. can I expect say more than 125Mbps on the line?
3.) If I wanted to move my ISP over to you how do I go about moving my connection to you and how much downtime can I expect during the process.

Thanks.

1. Our FUP says that the international performance is limited to 200 Mbps... But as you can see, for now it's slightly more. Also, International traffic is relative and it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what's international or not. We're also bolstering our peering continuously, so speeds only get better.

2. Depends on where to and what their upstream international bandwidth is, who their ISP is and countless other factors. I really can't guarantee anything.

3. Depending on whether you're trenched or Aerial, the process differs. The first step is to submit your cancellation and ensure you're not paying twice (so wait out the cancellation period). Then contact our FTTH team who will make sure your Is are dotted and Ts are crossed and co-ordinate a smooth, interruption free (or as close to possible) transition for you.

Also @websquadza, have you got any 'insider' info about IPV6 support on Vumatel?

If I remember correctly, you're on trenched... and mum's the word on Vuma's implementation there. Initially it was a flat no. Then it's in progress, but no further feedback. I'm personally using an HE tunnel on trenched for now. Now if you were on GPON, we're working on something that will launch soon. We are strongly advocating for v6 though - you'll see on ipv6-test.com that we are implementing it and running live services on native v6. All our hosting services, Business Fibre and more are v6 already. speedtest.websquad.co.za also supports v6. So we're just patiently waiting for Vumatel and Openserve to get their act together in this regard.

Have they fixed their network yet? I've been following other threads and seeing the (slight) improvements, but also mixed results. Will check again...

Thanx. Well, neighbor of my Mom seems happy with 100/100 on RocketNET on them (Octotel) in Strand Western Cape. Just want to have options (on Octotel) for my Mom..

Seems "Cape Town" and surrounds have some issues on Octotel, but just like "other ISPs" YMMV..

I saw this on the website:

So meaning if I want to change away from my current ISP.. I would just give them notice and when that's served.. move across to Websquad at the beginning of a month ?

And there's no upfront charges? Or is there something that needs to go to vumatel?

Hi guys, I am getting a weird issue of 91ms ping to Web Squad servers in Cape Town from Johannesburg and pretty bad ping spikes in games (local servers), is there perhaps an issue?

Thanks for the update. We're seeing it too - it looks like the primary route is down and the failover route has these terrible latencies. We have escalated this to our JHB-CPT circuit vendor for further feedback.

Thanks guys for the quick update, that explains the packet loss and ping spikes in games at least.
