P2P - depends on available seeds and how many peers are using the seeds, also depends on the quality of the international networks, people's upload speeds, throttling, routing etc. I generally get good speeds on old torrents which have 20 seeds and no peers. I don't touch the popular stuff though so I wouldn't know how well they perform. You'd probably get ddos'ed on them due to all the connections :p

FTP - Depends on the server's speed and the routing of the data to RSA.

20MB VDSL on home capped.

WA have said that they would investigate, but if they have I don't know about it.
 
Hi WebAfrica Helper, you used to only shape NNTP during business hours. For the last few weeks that is no longer the case as my line currently achieves between 10-15% of its max capacity after business hours. Is this temporary? Or will this be the performance going forward?

I also noticed this last night.

This kind of sucks. Even my uber crappy FNB uncapped account performs better with NNTP than Webafrica CAPPED.

Exactly my complaint
 
I tried really hard to organise myself a WA capped account today, but after a few hours of mediocre support and problems with my account I gave up and went for Vox instead.
 
If it is slow it is fine I just want the facts so I can make a decision if this account meets my needs.
If it is temporary I expect them to post the issue at https://www.webafrica.co.za/serverstatus.php
Or if it is a permanent change in their shaping policy they must tell me and don't tell me best effort again as that means nothing.

Basically it is impossible to ever get any information out of them when there is an issue on their network. Technical issues I can understand failure to communicate is another thing.

I know what your bandwidth profiles are and I know that the page has not changed in the last few years. However again saying best effort on it means nothing to me as I still don't know what speeds I can expect.

So yes your network has always been shaped however performances have degraded over time. For a long time after I moved to Web Africa on a bad day I use to achieve 800kb/s during business hours over NNTP. Then during business hours my speeds dropped and support told me that NNTP will be shaped during business hours. Now it is slow after business hours.
Are you telling me that this is now the performance I can expect going forward. Please don't quote your bandwidth profile page.

Also it is not only NNTP which has slowed down everything has just not by as much.

Are you in Cape Town?

Seems cape town has IPC capacity issues.
 
Yip I am in Cape Town which could explain it thanks.

If it is IPC issue that is fine but again I expect them to be forthcoming with that information and ideally it should be posted on the server status page so I don't have to attempt to contact support. If they say this is the expected performance I will hold nothing against them as a company. The data will just allow me to evaluate if this account will continue to meet my personal requirements.
 
Have they upgraded the Cape Town IPC yet? When is this going to happen? Performance is terrible down south

WA has, my stuff is blistering fast on AF and dead on WA.

Tested between them back and forth from Thursday and my AF account is flying
 
My line is extremely slow today...WTH WebAfrica??!! I'm only trying to browse, it feels like i'm surfing on a 56k modem...
