WebAfrica Capped ADSL

I'll see how my capped account behaves on 10mbps tomorrow after my line is upgraded. Otherwise it's back to business uncapped.

Hi Rouxenator,

The Capped and Uncapped service works differently and their network priorities are different. The Capped service doesn't work on a star rating system and it's not de-prioritised when your star rating is poor. However, yes - the Capped service is shaped and the protocols that are shaped are NNTP and P2P.
 
So here is where I got it wrong.

I thought that uncapped is slowed down the more you use. Therefore I figured I could do with a capped 60GB and have my downloads run in the download plus hours. I also figured that if I near the end of the month and still have enough data remaining of my 60GB bundle I'll just burn through it by letting my downloads run during normal hours.

That was the mistake I made. I though seeing as I pay for the data upfront I can use it at max speed in anyway I chose. If I want to hit my cap in one day with downloads I should be allowed to.

Not so it seems.

If my Home Capped is anything to go by (running 20MB VDSL using NNTP against WA/IS news server):

  • 00h00 - 00h00: 520Kb - 2.3MB. Appears to gradually slow down as more files are downloaded
  • 06h00 - 17h00: approx. 45KB/s
  • 17:00 - 20h00: approx. 150KB/s
  • 20h00 - 00h00: approx. 250KB/s. This doesn't always happen.

That would have been possible if you used the Business Capped Pro option, it's obviously more expensive, in your case R90 extra.

Currently looking at Vox as an option.

See I don't get it. ISPs typically buy capacity (100mbps or more) and how they use it is their problem. Why not sell that directly to the customer?
 
Rollover is what got me interested too. Although I still think it is wrong to sell internet in predefined volumes when they get it per capacity.

ON Business Capped, home capped, and even business capped pro, all protocols are shaped.

Mmm, pity Afrihost is down the tubes. Way back I used business uncapped and could torrent all day long at max speed.

If you have a 4Mbps line, they don't issue you with a 4Mbps pipe because that would cost you thousands per month. They buy a certain pipe and share it among lots of users. During the day the business users should get priority in the "bandwidth fist fighting" while at night, where there's low utilization of the entire pipe, it becomes more of a free for all.

Also, don't judge your ISP by the news server it provides. They (in this case Internet Solutions) don't hook up their entire bandwidth to the news server. If you want a fast news server for say a 10Mbps line, pay for one. It's not that expensive at all. I get great speeds on Astraweb with my WA account. I had to reduce my downloading queue yesterday since my 60GB cap is almost gone without even trying hard with my 4Mbps line.

I tested my WA line against Astra and still didn't get full speed during DL+

OTOH did achieve full speed with Astra + Afrihost during DL+

What's your line speed and are you using capped or uncapped? I always get full speed on my 4Mbps line with a home capped account from WA.
