Webafrica Response To Mweb uncapped

Yeah 'm not yet ready to jump ship i also think WA is better, I still remember how bad mweb used to be by buying out other ISPs then escalating prices killing off competition. But if no one can match mweb by next month mweb are off to a fresh new start with me.

I was with Webafrica for around 6 years. Was very loyal. I unfortunately lost out on some specials that they have had so it does not look like loyal customers get rewarded. Anyway, cancelled everything with web africa and now off to mweb. Lets see where we go from there.

correct. I cant find any link between naspers group and telkom, nothing that is official anyway... so the idea that telkom can keep mweb propped up bandwidth wise seems like a bit of a stretch of the imagination.

ill keep fishing around though

ofc - the initial response to date have been 'historic contracts', 'unsustaiable', 'blah blah' - We've roughly worked out MWebs costing and with a massive investment of Rx00m then you can do this quite happily. The guys who supply the ISPs should have already made this investment and so should know that it's a possible price and their margins for resale. I do kind feel sorry for WebAfrica's economy of scale though... hopefully they can pull something out of the bag after all that money spent.

First off though, I just want the large wholesalers to cut their margins so they don't compeltely cripple the ISP competition arena... and soon!

I agree the wholesales should come to the table soon, but like any corporate they can't just make a decision in one day they'll probably analyse what happened yesterday and hopefully come back with the right response , give them a few days
 
somehow i see some of the "major" isp's like webafrica and axxess sueing Mweb for being anti-competitive and undercutting their prices, OpenWeb has their adverts flashing all around this site of "4096kps ADSL uncapped for R1299" sure many like myself are laughing and saying "I knew it all along! - these hogs were over charging us and passing blame of the high cost of bandwith!"

Only thing that worries me is if Mweb gets a monopoly they'll turn the internet into another Monochoice. Think I'll stick with WA for now.
 
there's an old chinese proverb that reads something like ... "the person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it"
 
I sort of see the strategy they are using with this.

This is a special, not their new prices. There must be a limited number of signups for this offer, just before they have too many people on uncapped they close the special. Then they don't have to degrade the service. Thas their demnad increases they will require more bandwidth and will be able to offer the special to more people.
They are actually a bit more clever than people like WA and SAOL that just let everyone sign up and then suffer with a high contention ratio.
 
waroop, can you please explain to me why there are no large caps? I don't need uncapped, just a larger cap (at 4Mb)

It is actually the complete opposite of this.
The MORE people you have on the system the cheaper you can run it. i.e. If you have 100,000 accounts with 4MB lines then the chances of them all using it at the same times is very very low... you can add in very large contention ratios... e.g. 50:1. (this is the typical internet model)

MWeb have 150,000 ADSL accounts from 384k-4MB and 300,000 internet accounts across all areas... that's before they even sell a single uncapped to a new customer.

Believe me... I think this will work and all it took was an established client base and an initial large investment of cash in to running and creating their own infracstructure. Not many other companies could have done this.

You are not comparing apples with apples. The uncapped option is not an "option" for many of us because of the throttling. It's only an option for people who are downloading torrents etc or very high volumes after hours. It's better to compare the WA bundle with the Afrihost 100GB (R1900) one which is not throttled but a lot cheaper. WA are too expensive and will have to do something about it soon (maybe they should acquire some SEACOM bandwidth for the cheaper "unreliable" accounts) but I don't think it's fair to keep comparing uncapped throttled accounts to capped un-throttled accounts whether it is Afrihost, WebAfrica, CyberSmart, etc.
 
I think Im calling in and asking to get on this for next month, in this month alone went from axxess, to afrihost to this seriously these ISP wars are looking good, well on the client side at least!

OpenWeb's product was an unshaped business product. Hence the similar price to Mweb's R1999.

But they also just announced that they are matching Mweb's prices / partnering with Mweb.
