Webafrica Response To Mweb uncapped

MWeb are not owned by Telkom. Telkom purchased some of Mweb's African operations, but not the SA operation. AFAIK MWeb is part of the Naspers group.

Telkom are going to have to respond, though, because this turns their "do" into "poo".

I think you might wanna put a 'rush' on those plans or you're going to lose alot of customers from the 23rd/24th onwards.
 
Telkom South Africa is to acquire 100% of internet service provider MWEB Africa and 75% of MWEB Namibia from media group Naspers for ZAR610 million (USD63 million) as it looks to expand its businesses outside its domestic market. maybe thats why they can offer uncapped so cheap......since we have been over paying for DSTV for 14 years so they got some cash saved up :D

Or...maybe they just figured launching such a cheap service would give so much online hype that less people will notice that ODM announced their pricing and channels and figured the less people who notice they have options other than DSTV would make up for the loss :D
 
Anyone else want to tell SHVAK that Telkom doesn't own Mweb?

I don't think he's been traumatized enough yet.

Unfortunately, a response like this from the COO of WebAfrica would make me doubt the quality of any similar offer from WebAfrica in the near future.
 
You know if the price of 4Mbps Uncapped had dropped by say R500, everyone would have been like "Awesome, well done" and then everyone would have responded ... With such a huge drop, everyone is going to be wondering if it is sustainable ? My opinion is that it costs nothing to change ISP's, so what if something happens to MWEB ? Then I move back to Afrihost etc.

BTW, Why is it that is costs like R6k for a dedicated 1Mbps Internet connection ?
 
We have a meeting with Vodacom ADSL this morning... will be interesting to see their response now that we have more than figures to prove that these costs are completely possible.
So far IS do not have a single response which is very disappointing... if you know your business then you know your margins.

Can't be too hard for them all to say 'oh sorry.... that's right we've been selling to you ISPs at x5 of the actual price for years... now we're forced to, here's a reasonable price.'

ofc - the initial response to date have been 'historic contracts', 'unsustaiable', 'blah blah' - We've roughly worked out MWebs costing and with a massive investment of Rx00m then you can do this quite happily. The guys who supply the ISPs should have already made this investment and so should know that it's a possible price and their margins for resale. I do kind feel sorry for WebAfrica's economy of scale though... hopefully they can pull something out of the bag after all that money spent.

First off though, I just want the large wholesalers to cut their margins so they don't compeltely cripple the ISP competition arena... and soon!

I've never used Webafrica and never intend to. Why they always *** in their panties when someone else manages to offer a cheaper service than them is beyond me. They did the same thing when Afrihost offered their cheap R29 per gig offering. So yes...definitely sour grapes if you ask me.

I'm now laughing at Openweb's 4096K All Hours Uncapped SALE - R2449 pm ad. Hmmm let me think R539 or R2449 pm. Very hard choice to make. LOL.

My guess is that this is Telkom's first salvo in what should be an interesting bandwidth war.
They will watch the numbers and see how many new subscribers Mweb gets without having to drop any of their mainstream Telkom and Do clients.
Total win, win for them.
Sadly i think this marks the end of the line for the smaller players like Axxess. Hell they are charging resellers R28.50 per gig while Mweb are uncapping lol.
