WebAfrica slow speeds

Thanks guys.
Let's keep a close eye on it - post up here if there are any further issues later on today.

it is better today.
last night my pings were fine, http was terrible, things like itunes and steam were dead.

Seems like we're experiencing a temporary issue on one of our international links, should be back up shortly.
More updates to follow on the status page and forum link I posted above.

Could possibly have been related, since both Steam and iTunes are both based internationally. Are these two apps running better today?

i used itunes this morning it worked fine, i didnt do a speedtest or anything.
I'm sure my gf will yell if the internet is not working properly, she's home and i'm at work now.

Can open Websites again, but it is still slower than it was before I started this thread:

I am getting the impression the network is being left to its own devices overnight, as nobody over there reacted to it being bogged down until this morning - about 10 hours later.

Seems like 2Mb/s is the new 3.3Mb/s.

Clever way to nudge your customers onto a more expensive account. ;)

Thing is, the WA network was solid as a rock for years before their IPC came into play, but ever since then the speed and stability took a hit, unless you are in Cape Town it seems.

Been a terrible evening for streaming, couldn't even watch a 400 Kbps stream between 6-10 PM when I gave up. Speedtest says I have 2 Mbps down. I did 4.4 GB during D+ so it's not my line.

I'm now down to 3Gb during D+ - down from the 8Gb a night I was able to get 3 weeks ago.

At this rate I may as well move to an uncapped 384k solution for my downloads - at least with that I know what I can expect.

And in case anyone asks, I have logged this as a support ticket with WA, and the outcome was: "get a more expensive account". To me, it seems, we are getting what we pay for.

For comparison, two tests I just ran. I am on one of the MyBB 11GB accounts they offered a while back, btw.

This is shocking:

On a 4 meg line.

My download speeds are getting close to 20 kbs at best.

WA seems to have gone quiet on this front - not a good sign.

Hey Fulton,

I've created an escalation for our DSL and Engineers guys to have a look at things from our side.

@detritus These results look fine from my end, you happy with the speeds and latency from your perspective too?

Really slow last night again

Same issues as most people on this thread. Dead internet for times, slow browsing, slow youtube streaming, slow poker playing, disconnect from servers, etc, etc

I am also on 30GB special account. Problems started since last month and been getting worse and worse since.

Shaping is one thing, dead internet and disconnects is quite another. Tell your networking guys they must stop denying there is a problem and up their game or resign. Shaping is difficult to get right.

@Fulton: I believe that we logged a line fault for you earlier this morning, so our DSL guys will keep you updated on things.

@Plaasjapie: Are you on the Red Africa account? Please let me know if you've informed our DSL Department about this? If so, please PM me your client code and any relevant ticket ref #'s so I can follow up on things for you :)

Hi Jeff, I am very happy with my results. I posted these to show that the WA network is not all doom and gloom. I should have been a bit clearer on that point.

Hehe, no worries dude!
If you wanted something faster I might have had to offer you a room in our DC ;)

I just received a reply from WebAfrika support stating that I, and not them, need to do multiple tests before they even consider logging a case with their "engineers". Speedtests, port and protocol tests, traceroutes, etc.

Now firstly, which "normal" customer is capable of doing these tests?
Secondly, speedtests are rather useless, as most ISP's give priority to these servers to keep up the illusion of fast speeds.
Thirdly, doing "tests", are rather impossible when your whole internet connection goes "dead" with no traffic being able to flow for up to a minute or more sometimes.

But hey, these guys are sharp !

Hi Jeff,

I am back up and running. Not too sure if that is due to Telkom and sorting out my problem, or power being restored after cable theft in the area

Speedtest result: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1345492366.png. Better than last one, but still not right :erm:

Youtube buffering on 360p so that is not great.

At least I am connected to the net :)

cancelling

It was good while it lasted.

I signed up with their dsl complete titan package. Then moved on to Titan 2.
Since the RED packages came into play. Speeds are horrible.

The only question i have is, if i cancel now, will i be charged for July ?
I want to take my account back to Telkom and try my luck with other capped account providers than can give me max speed.

Oh , one more thing. Is there any per gigabyte package left at W.Africa that isn't subject to their recent bandwidth shaping rules ?

Oh dear, it appears my modem had synced at low speads, after modem reset i am flying again !
Now, about cancelling that cancellation ...
