Weight loss

like I said in a earlier post it's very difficult to come up with a one size fits all solution, I've learnt a lot over the past 2 years of exploring the science of nutrition, but I still feel it's a hugely under-studied field and there's lots of conflicting information and at times I also feel that I've still only scratched the surface. I'll help out where I can in terms of highlighting bad or pseudo-science, or common myths based on either of those.

but here's some basics based on what I've learnt:

can exercise help with weight loss? - yes, but it's not a major contributor, an average male would have to run for an hour a day for 40 days to burn off about half a kilo of fat, all things being equal.
carbs, in short, are evil - especially highly refined carbs
GI - is not a perfect indicator of anything
stay away from polyunsaturated fats (PUFA's) and look for saturated fats
find what works for you, understand the way your body reacts to carbs, fats, proteins, experiment but do so from a perspective of knowledge, not the latest fad on the newest web site

ok those are the general rules i live by, but what about the calorie deficit thing?
In your opinion does it make a diff.

As much as i dont count calories to the T, still good to know what other options are vailable, coz if im eating all the right things, but eating too much of it, i will put on weight irrespectively.

its very helpful, esp to see what and how much you put in your body, if you keep at it, it becomes part of your lifestyle.

Goes hand in hand with label reading.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, don't do it....

Seriously just exercise, most people's issue with exercise is that it feels like work...so start doing something that is fun like riding bike, hiking, dancing (people really under estimate how much of a work out it is), kick boxing, swimming....

But don't count calories....

Hell even start drinking green tea if you don't already.

hahaha its def not for everyone, i did it couple months back, and i dont anymore.

although, now i know which foods are high in sugar/fat and tend to stay away from them, otherwise, i do my own thing wrt food :)

calorie counting is a waste of time for a number of reasons, this video gives a nice simple overview, by the way, this guys youtube channel looks very informative, I just need to validate his science but at first glance it looks like he's on the right track

I was forced sometime ago to go on a strict low suger, low salt and low fat diet and one thing is for sure, you learn to appreciate not to watch everything you eat.

In any case do you really want to deny yourself all the little pleasures of life?
