Hi - time for the SO to get a big screen TV. The budget is around R12K and we'd like at least 40". Not necessarily fussed about the LCD or plasma debate but we'd like an excellent picture. Kids play Playstation and Wii.

What do you recommend?

Get a 47" Sinotec Full-HD, currently at Makro for a whiff under R12K.

Wait until it goes on a discount promotion and have enough cash left for some AV cabling and a week-ends take-aways.

yes cool idea...

...if you have time on sat morning go hang around in makro, as they have decent (altough timed) in-store promotions and you might just be lucky and get a good price

LG Scarlet 42" Full HD...Makro has it for R13 999...I was in the market for a TV now, I would go for that. It doesn't use Samsung's *** panels. LG and Philips uses the same panels. Samsung could have you sitting with image retention like me. I've googled it and google actually has a specific search for Samsung LCD image retention. Stay away from their TVs. Philips or the LG Scarlet. Spend the extra R2000...you won't be sorry.

The Sinotec Full HD 42" LCD is available at Game for R6,999 this week. Don't have one myself, but have heard good things of Sinotec on this forum. You'll have lots of change left :D

For a very good reason, they crap!
Its hard to believe, but even with 100hz and full HD the picture quality is poor.
Even the remote looks like a cheap Telefunken remote.

I was a fan of that TV, but not anymore, a friend of mine has his in a complex, his neighbour own a Samsung TV and everytime he changes channels the Phillips also changes channels. Both TVs face in different directions...

Bass boost is awesome though!

not fussed about LCD vs Plasma?

i'd say that Sino 42" for 7k is pretty good, i have one - but for PC use. for TV (Essentially SD Quality) you want a plasma.

I think you can get a pretty decent samsung plasma for 12k...

Plasma is the way to go if you not doing too much gaming and watch standard definition TV. Its also got a USB input for pics and music.

I got a plasma and play alot of games, its handles pretty well even though it isnt Full HD. Ive played on Full HD LCD's as well and dont really think there is a massive difference to me.

LCD for games, since yr kids like gaming (assuming PS3).
Sinotec has very low contrast, did not like it.
Sony S series 40", normally sells below 12k - check Game and Makro - when they having a special only.

Thanks all - that Sony from Makro is a little old. You can get the latest Sony S series for about R1k more.

I got the Sony V Series 40" from Digital Experience for R12500.

Get the 50" HD Samsung plasma.

-200

I bought one when they just came out R29 999 ... could not live with it. Samsung's image processing is horrific ... motion jitter, false contouring, blue/red bands when panning across people's faces. Image is better with NTSC material, but these okes never tested properly at PAL refresh rates (and no, it's not a case of me not knowing how to set/callibrate the thing), they had new firmware out to correct some of the issues, but the SA models will only accept a specific firmware update, and they have not brought that out yet. I wanted a really good TV and knew that Pioneer's KURO was the absolute best, but then saw that I could have this Samsung at 10G's less and it has FullHD!

Anyway, I then convinced the shop to source me a 508XG KURO and paid in R10K. The best R10K I have ever spent. Image quality is lightyears ahead of anything Samsung has. If you can afford it, get a KURO while you still can, really worth it.
