For the last week and a half family are complaining about delays on Whatsapp and Instagram when using WiFi at home. Using mobile data it responds properly.
Service provider is Afrihost on ADSL. Yet speedtests to myBB show no problem:Ping 26ms; Download 3.77Mbps; Upload 0.39Mbps
Testmy.net also shows Download Connection Speed:: 3070 Kbps or 3.1 Mbps ; Upload Connection Speed:: 357 Kbps or 0.4 Mbps

Despite speedtests the Internet does not seem anywhere near as fast as it used to be to most sites. Rebooting router multiple times every day does not help. Using a capped bundle that is nowhere near its limit. Very frustrating, been with Afrihost for years.

Wow, I never picked up on this before. So things have changed. Capped packages are being shaped "as a last resort" according to AH website. Certainly not last resort based on the past while. To go uncapped I must halve my data package. Not impressed for sticking it out with AH all these years with their troubles, the move to MTN etc. And thinking I had a good value for money deal. Supposedly realtime services are not shaped, so what the hell is going on? I logged a call a week ago, was told to reboot my router, only communication was by mail, and an SMS to check if I am satisfied. I just haven't had the time to follow through.

Edit: thinking about this, it is the last 2 months, I have just not been paying much attention to it. I often leave WiFi off on my cell at home, and the family have been complaining on and off about speeds. i just put it down to someone downloading and affecting the others. It was never like this before.

The shaping on Capped accounts is only ever applied to P2P and HTTP downloads.

Real-time services like browsing - which includes Instagram and WhatsApp - won't ever be shaped.

So we definitely need to figure out why you aren't having a great experience. :(

Which DNS servers are you using at the moment?

thanks for response:
Primary DNS Server: 169.1.1.2
Secondary DNS Server: 169.1.1.1
I will be leaving home soon, is there any other inf o you need?

Could you please PM me your DSL username, I want to check a few things on my side.

Hi Afriman
Any progress today? We had an extended power outage at home yesterday from 1pm to 9pm so I guess there wasn't much that could be done without the modem/router connected.

Wi-Fi channel congestion.

Have you ever checked to see what is going on around you in the Wi-Fi frequency band you are using?

Download an app such as Wi-Fi analyser, and see what is going on around you. You may be surprised at what you find.

Thanks Geoff. I use WiFi analyser. Very little WiFi, only pick up 2 neighbours AP's with much lower signal.

Always worth checking

Again general slow response. I want to change my package to uncapped unshaped and hope that will sort it out.

In whatsapp do you get a little clock, one tick or two ticks when you send a massage?

I have asked to change to a capped unshaped account. I cannot continue with the ridiculous shaping. Even trying to log in to gmail is slow. I have to sort this out now or change service providers. PM's have been sent. On the Afrihost App I have to wait till 1 May to change packages. Maybe it is better to change service providers.

Really wouldn't like for you to change service providers. :( The reason for the package change delay is because of the fact that you have paid for your current package in advance. I got your PM, though, and we'll pick it up from there.
