They're also always constantly re-writing their billing system because the previous one is such a ****up. since they started (even Sentech) I've written 3 fully integrated financial systems. With Sage, Pastel and Great Plains. All of them working perfectly. Some clients reporting gross sales of a few billion Rand... and not even 1 cent out of place due to rounding issues or anyone not receiving their bill at the end of the month or (surprisingly) 5 years later receives a bill for something they thought they paid.

maybe you can offer him a job? afterall, i have 0 experience in billing software.

and like Gecko says IBURST IS NOT COMPETITION FOR MTN OR VODACOM its COMPETITION for FIXED LINE OPERATORS.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, this is a CEO of an ISP.

Maybe iburst should change their logo to include 2 round ears.

So you now say that you can't write a billing system in 3 days as per your previous post? You sounded so sure that it could be done. Damn, I thought we had a quick solution.....

There are a number of suppliers of broadband in South Africa today, and trust me, they all compete with each other. And this competition will just increase over the next few months.

Well if you read your last 10 or posts to me they were pretty attacking....in any case, let's leave it there.

I've got complete spreadsheets with all the Telco pricing but I'm not sure I'm reading it correctly, especially the two ADSL 'line' charges. Pretty difficult to find anyone at the office this time of night to confirm. I'm sure I'm the last one here.

But I do know someone on this forum will know, thus my question. Unlike many others, I've learned a long time ago it's much better to ask if you're not sure than make assumptions. Sure you'll agree?
 
Afaik for adsl you need a data line and a voice line which are 2 different charges.Just about everyone has a voice line already.

Thought you would know that as CEO OF AN ISP.

Yup, I'm one of those weird people who have no problem to ask if I'm not sure. Unlike many who make statements as fact and end up looking a bit foolish. Like writing a 100 000 user billing systems in 3 days. ;)

I notice you've been a myBroadband member for less than a month. If you hang around for a few years (like many of us) you'll notice this is a community where members actually try and help each other. Thus I have no problem asking fellow forumites if I'm not sure. I know the ones who actually contribute won't have any problem helping.
 
i just joined mybb because iburst doesnt have a proper reporting and fixing place on their own website and i'm tired of your incompetent staff that answers phone calls.So ye, i joined to bitch and moan.

about the billing system, wouldnt you hire a company that has implemented hundreds if not thousands of billing systems already instead of recreating the wheel. I just dont see how that can take a long time (more then a week).
 
Give Jannie a break guys. Im sure hes working on a way of providing us with a cheap, reliiiable(?) iBurst connection as we speak

Im still going with 6 August though :D

Do you live in Jhb? If so, I'd like to invite you to come over to the offices and I'll gladly show you what the guys are building. Trust me, it takes a bit more than a week.

Let me know and I'll set it up. I see you're into Linux, so you'll enjoy the type and size of the Unix systems we use.
 
For argument sake, can someone with more knowledge do a comparision with Telkom ADSL and iBurst.

Like that we can compare Apples with Apples. (Instead of Iburst with Vodacom/MTN etc...)

Have a look at this article myADSL posted 2 days ago:

According to this a 384kb/s, 1GB ADSL line costs between R270 and R330 / month.

An iBurst 1Mb/s, 1GB bundle is R199 per month. If you include a modem it's R219 / month. This is substantially less.

A 384Kb/s, 3GB ADSL line is between R389 and R520 depending on where you get it.

An iBurst 1Mb/s, 3GB bundle is R449 per month. If you include a modem it's R469 / month. This is in the middle of the ADSL pricing range.

A 4Mb/s, 5GB ADSL line is between R685 and R880 depending on where you get it.

An iBurst 1Mb/s, 5GB bundle is R599 per month. If you include a modem it's R619 / month. This is substantially less.

So, in summary (using the ADSL table above):

- At 1GB, iBurst is cheaper than ADSL, and at a higher speed.
- At 3GB, iBurst is in the same range as ADSL, but at a higher speed.
- At 5Gb, iBurst is cheaper than ADSL, but at a lower speed.

These seem to be the only 3 offerings from Telkom in their 'do Broadband' offer, at least I can't find a 384Kb/s, 5GB offer.

Looking at the link Rustum provided, a 3G, 512Kb/s (still slower than iBurst @ 1Mb/s) ADSL is R560 per month. iBurst is substantially lower @ R449 - R469.

So at 1G, 3G and 5G, iBurst seems to be lower in price than ADSL. For the 1G and 3G bundles, iBurst is faster and for the 5G, ADSL is faster.

I can do a comparison with the mobile players, if needed, but clearly iBurst will be substantially lower. For the record, iBurst is actually fully mobile with full handover between cells. The new USB modems are now much closer in size to the HSDPA ones.
