Yeah global and local are two different things and use different distribution channels.

I’m not saying it’s on par with VW, they along with Toyota will always have the benefit of a local factory.

But it’s no worse than any other fully imported brands. We aren’t talking about waiting weeks to panel beat a bumper bash or the like here.
 
Man I used to drive a Corsa for the longest time. Even have video of my kids playing in it when they were barely 2 years old. Did almost 300k km with it.

No you can't, they can try cut it to fit. I've had those cars and attempted to buy the generics. Hence why you see a lot of cars with broken or worn out rears cause they aren't generics.

Those parts were all purchased from 3rd party providers and not a dealership. I think Opel is more expensive because if I take two prices and compare them, I find that one is more than the other and that qualifies the statement of "more expensive".

So then you cut them, or you get it from the dealership.

This is not a reason not to buy a car.

Besides the fact that a car needs extremely high mileage to truly wear out a wiper blade.

So you run around getting quotes for your car and then you also ask them to just quote me for the same on X because I just want to see something?

Fact is you probably had a car 15 years ago where it cost Y and now you are comparing it with a car in the modern context where it costs Z and you think it’s more expensive because it’s gone up.

Or you went from a 1.0 N/A Fiesta with drums at the back to a sporty 1.2T with discs all round and larger calipers at that which takes two sets of pads.

The world went to ****. Inflation happened as well as a load of other stuff that’s why it’s more expensive now, not because of the brand.

In 2014 I got quoted to do brakes on my GTI both discs and pads and it was R9000 at the third party workshop. I bought the parts for R2500 and did it myself.

Guaranteed you can’t buy discs and pads for a GTI in 2024 for R2500 because that’s just how it works.

Jirre but you've got your back up because I disagreed with your opinion about a car brand you like for some reason.

My girlfriend drives a Fiesta Ecoboost and I take responsibility for the maintenance on her vehicle. So it's a like for like comparison against a contemporary vehicle of similar class and value. So no, I'm not talking out my ass, I'm speaking on my own experience, in the present.

You don't have to like it or agree, but that horse you're on seems a little tall for the context of this conversation. You're not the only person with experience with vehicles and your experiences don't negate those of others.

I just deeply dislike these blanket statements when they only look at a handful of things and come to conclusions without looking at a total ownership picture.

Besides the lack of real evidence.

They always seem like feelings rather than facts.

If it was real concern it’s as simple as phoning up the insurance and if one car is significantly more expensive than the others it’s because the parts bin for repairs is much more expensive.

If they are in line then that’s the end of the concern right there.

The thread asked for opinions and advice. I provided an opinion and advice based on my experience as an owner of an Opel. Yes, I didn't price every car part and draw up a spreadsheet to do a total cost comparison.

As for Insurance, I pay R1250pm for a 2020 Opel Corsa 1.0 EcoFlex as a 38 year old, stably employed male living in Fourways with zero accident claims, ever. You can determine if that's a good rate or not.

That does actually seems very expensive but probably because of Fourways.

What does the girlfriend pay for insurance and on what car?

I pay R1414 for a 2022 Haval H6 HEV with quite a history of stupid claims.

R1779 if I add the excess waiver and 30 day rental car hire.

Could be area-related. It was ~R1350 when I stayed in Krugersdorp for a bit 3 years ago.

Girlfriend pays ~R,1100 for vehicle and household on a 2016 Fiesta Ecoboost Ambiente.
 
Having looked at all cars in that price range recently, I can fairly confidently say that the best option for your young friend is a secondhand (but very low-mileage) automatic Volkswagen Polo Life. They’re extremely frugal, and drive like a big car. AutoTrader has a large number at low prices currently, all the VW dealerships seem to be selling them.
 
My first ever job was selling cars. The boss told me the first day on the job that if I want to get fired the I call him with somebody that wants to trade in an Opel. he would even consider trading in a Ford rather than an Opel.

So you’ll agree they are near identical considering the age of the vehicles which makes their values differ quite a bit.

She's ~R150 cheaper including household insurance and it has been that way for the last few years.
