Which Fiber ISP?

1. The fibre provider is Octotel. Hence I am clueless about the install cost.
2. Most of these FISPs including Cool Ideas do not allow you to muck around with the router AFAIK
3. I only want a single ISP, but I wish to choose the right one.. don't want to pay school fees.

On point 2. You can use your own router, and all the settings you want on that router (that is how it is for me) so not sure not sure what limitations you are speaking about

By router I mean the optical network terminal. I would imagine that such a device would be remotely administered by the ISP or am I having the wrong end of the stick here?

If it is indeed the case that I can drop my own optically capable router, then its probably a good idea to ask here:
Which ones do you recommend?

Sadly, you can't use your own ONT device. But that is set by the fibre provider, not ISP, I don't think you will get any ISP that are able to provide you any help there

That's what I suspected and implied.. I don't want to change their ONT, I just want to be sure they don't roll eyes and give me a story when I tell them I want them to forward all ports to my Mikrotik (which will be the router I will supply)

That is something you will need to discuss with Octotel, Cool Ideas will not be able to assist you there, as they themselves don't have access to do it.

That's the info I needed, thanks.. you seem knowledgeable. So, incorrectly I assume I need to get Octotel to do the install first, then choose the ISP (not choose the ISP and assume they will do it all)

Upon further inspection...

So according to that... they pay Ocototel the line rental...
And on Octotel's website they refer any questions directly to the ISP concerned- a whole list of phone numbers...

So... Cool Ideas are a company that doesn't respond to simple requests for info.
The search continues..

where did you try? I sent them enquiry on page https://www.cisp.co.za/contact-us/ and got response within 2-3 hours.
Response was that they don't have service in our complex yet but they still responded rather quickly.

p.s. I see only now that you got a ticket ID as well and wanted to escalate - no idea then.

I did that via their website bro... I gave them two days then I mentioned it here... The moment I mentioned the ticket # here, I got the canned three line response via email.

I did the PM route, I got an official response, rather a stock cut-and-paste one that doesn't answer my questions so I am going to pose the questions I had here rather seeing that many of you are very knowledgeable.

1. I need to know on their deals, if there is an installation cost (their website is cagey about this) as a piece of cable will need to be run from the box outside into the house.

2. Can I ask them to port-forward all TCP/UDP ports on their ONT to my Mikrotik Routerboard so that I can do my own router/firewall and not have to wait days for requests to do stuff like a port forward when I get a new

3. What is the FUP and how much on these "uncapped" packages do I need to download to get throttled. Also what is the shaping like (in other words do I need to keep my seedbox to sail on the high seas or not)
My XP with CISP

1. No install cost
2. Have ONT connected directly to my Mikrotik. Have setup NAT/port forwards no probs
3. There is no FUP / shaping / throttling; have been able to download at full speed 24/7 since I got fibre in 4 months ago

Thank you kindly..

The ONT is the layer1 termination, your Mikrotik will dial your PPP and be "directly" connected to the internet.
Thank you for the answer I was seeking. Just a pity it took one week to get the answer. Wonder if that same turn-around time is applicable on fault tickets too

Thanks for all the advice given.
Looking at CISP's current track record, will give them a skip, rather go with Vox Telecom (as I am used to their issues and can work around accordingly)
