I would suggest cooling it down a little, the high ABV just evaporates in the mouth and dries up your mouth before you get to taste anything. Same with the nose, the summer temperatures causes the alcohol to evaporate and burns the nose before you can get any flavour. Pour a dram and leave it in the fridge for a few minutes, it doesn't have to be cold.

I got my my bottle today and will try this. Would you suggest a drop of water in these high ABV whiskies? I’ll try without first but have a feeling a drop would open it up a little?

I like it and haven’t had it for years. Never seen it here either and seeing the Crabbies whisky made me think of it. Funny thing is I was thinking of it as an ingredient for a whisky mac cocktail and was actually confusing it with Stones ginger wine.

But hey, it was a throw away post without thinking too much. Maybe just scroll past next time. Acting like a smart arse on such a friendly group isn’t necessary.
So was mine when posting the Google links.

Maybe you shouldn't act like a smart arse then either?

When your have a full bottle you owe it to yourself to experienment. Add a little water at a time and find your balance.... Maybe even some iced rooibos tea, I personally haven't tried it but it might work....... Note to self, I need to try this.

That does sound pretty good. Nice idea. Wife is nodding in approval too.

During our online Club Friendly Tasting on Friday I had:

  • Ardbeg Wee Beastie and Underberg Gingerbeer
  • Lagavulin 16yo and Coke (Smoky Cokey)

Both were awesome...
I have a thing I like in the whisky industry - drink your whisky the way you like it. If you like it with coke, go for it. Perhaps I'll try the smokey cokey as well now.

Double tot...in standard beer glass with ice. Fill with mixer.

Basically like pouring a rum & coke or brandy & coke.

I have also poured it 50/50 in a tumbler...with an iceball. Tastes amazing...

I picked up a pack of 2 ice balls at the weekend to add to the one I already have. This is an omen, I think some experimenting is in order this weekend.

I make bags of the stuff...perfect for wine and coctails etc as it does not melt so quickly. A real PIA to make but once stock levels are up, it's well worth it.

Dude you started a thing with this smokey cokey thing now. It's awesome, and Ardbeg is expensive. I wonder how it'll do with Laphroig Select considering the peat isn't near this level...

You can only try it! I think Takealot also has Select on special at the moment.

Or buy the Bottega deal:

The strong TCP flavors of Laphroaig may clash with Coke though...
