No this is very reasonable to ask. It's up to you if you keep the boxes. If you are collecting to resell then the box is part of the value. If you are drinking then it's your choice. Some boxes are nice to look at, some people like the extra step of taking the whisky out of the gift tin.

The only rules for storing whisky are; not on its side (you could 'cork' it and away from sunlight.
That last statement, keep in the box cos it keeps it out of the light.

I store my bottles in the pantry, way up top, darkest part I can find. Works well for me. If it has a box, it's in the box.

To give more detail:

A bottle of Whisky recently costing me GBP 44.13 had additional costs of R 1.36 for Duties, R 162 VAT and R68.20 in Excise.

Then add approx R150 in DHL pre -clearance and then there is/or isn't the latest Dept, of Agriculture fee of R230.

So total of: R 611.56
DHL have charged me R384 also for a GBP 44 purchase.

What's the breakdown?

There's a clearance fee, customs and vat.
Can't seem to find this.

Got a IMPORT DUTY/TAX PAYMENT IS REQUIRED with the amount to pay.
Then IMPORT DUTY/TAX PAYMENT CONFIRMATION after payment.

Will look further.

So if you take my figures WITHOUT the Dept, of Agriculture extortion, that's what it gets too. I'm very sure that was a rip of or mistake or something...

My shipment after that did not incur that fee...
Either way it's listed as an "Exception" so it might be half empty when I get it after customs takes a few shots.

Didn't get that (yet?)
Usually at the same time, I don't pay before I see mine. They make many mistakes. My record is 4 submissions on 1 shipment before they got it right.

Make sure they have the following correct:

  • Column 27: check it's 700ml and not 750ml. Of course if you buy a 1000ml bottle...say nothing ;)
  • Duty: Must only be R 1.36 on 700ml
  • Vat is VAT
  • Excise MUST be 12A code for spirits... they do an ABV based calculation.

Nope...they're just lazy or sometimes forget. Call them and ask them to email it to you. They will/must do it...
@dualmeister That being said: those amounts looked correct based on your GBP total paid, so I do not think you need to worry.

A discrepancy is usually glaring. I would just pay so that you get your stuff before the next lock down hits and Port Health Authority goes on go slow again...then it may take 2 weeks instead of 3 days.

Highly doubt there will be any left by then :)
I gave in and bought a bottle. I have a bad feeling about my bank balance now that I've found this thread. Will also pick up the Shiraz if this Three Ships is a hit.

Got these lined up, too:
Glen Scotia 15
Bowmore 15
Amrut Fusion
Ardbeg Uige
Inchmurrin 18

Got another R1500 to add one or two extra on. Maybe Laphroaig or Lagavulin - see what this hype is about:unsure:

IMHO:

Forget the Bowmore 15...many better peated Whisky in that price Range. It's thin with short finish. Same with the Inchmurrin 18.

The Glenscotia 15 is fantastic, but only if you love Campbeltown whisky. ( Longrow, Springbank and of course the new jewel in the crown: Kilkerran)

Arbeg Uige is phenomenal and a MUST have.

I literally bought an Amrut Fusion TODAY from WaW, so also looking forward to that.

See booklet below I got when I bought Amrut Peated:

I'm pretty new to all of this so I'm trying to find my bearings so I appreciate your thoughts. FWIW, the AncNoc 18 is my favourite at this point after testing a few of my collection.

Inchmurrin is R1400
Bowmore is R855

What would you recommend instead?

This is SO subjective...I hesitate to make any recommendations.

Peated or not?
Sherried or not?

Average budget per bottle?
