Yeeesh, still high. It was R800 odd in Japan.

Speaking of cheaper elsewhere, this is about a grand more at Whisky Brother. Worth it?

axsis do u have the Inchmurrin or the Loch Lomond 18?

I have the Loch Lomond 18, I like it enough. I found the Inchmurrin 18 a bit too boring when I tried it.

Edit: I should point out Inchmurrin 18 is still better than Chivas 18 (yuck).

You can get a bit cheaper on TheWhiskyWorld (but it's a 2018 bottling). WhiskyExchange is the cheapest.

Great price - considering the XOP sets people back a lot more for a 21!
Hi, I've only bought locally and the odd occasion when Im in a duty free shop while travelling.
Online - yes - but only in South Africa
How the experience and reliability of WhiskyExchange.
And whats the procedure when shipping to one home? Pricy?

Thanks for any insight you can share.

Cheers

Shipping depends usually on how many bottles you are buying, the flat rate starts quite high so it's worth buying more and for friends etc. Anywhere that uses DHL is pretty good.

Customs can be either a win, ok, or a huge pain. Do always check that things are correct but if it's only small discrepancies, pay early clearance, and move on with your life.

You will get charged generally:

- Duty (1.54 (current duty rate, used to be 1.36~ last year) * volume) so 1.08 for a 700ml bottle
- VAT (not what you think, this is 15% of ((the total amount + 10%) + duty + any excise charges e.g. 12A)
- 12A which is a charge based on alcohol percentage. Not a clue how this is worked out exactly I'm sure someone knows though.
You can sometimes be charged an ad Valorem charge (12B), not sure on that either.
Some people have been hit with additional R300~ charges from agriculture and fisheries.

I'm sure with some digging or speaking to people you could work out these charges fully, if you want to.

In a sense, you can luck out and sometimes they might not do something correctly but you also have to check that you are charged correctly too and that can be tricky.

So to give you an example taken from a recent customs worksheet:

A 46% abv bottle of whisky costing (£65.73 excl VAT (customs set an exchange rate of 20.28 for duties on import date, exchange rate on the day was 19.8)):

Duty = 1.08
VAT = 231.15
12A = 73.66
DHL fees = not sure on this but could be up to 320ish
Base shipping at TWE = £30 = R594
In the end, the total for the bottle would set you back around R2520 ~ at a 19.8 exchange rate.

So on TWE you probably want to be ordering at least 5 bottles to cut into that £30 base shipping as shipping for 5 bottles is only £50, which makes it only £10 per bottle. Which would bring the cost per bottle of this example down to about R1858.

Maybe the above helps somewhat, there's still some weird numbers used behind the scenes as you'll notice the sum I gave for VAT doesn't actually give you exactly that number. Hence why I'm not prepared to guess the 12A formula.

Landed amount = £65.73. DHL rate means landed amount was R1333. Duties for this bottle came to R1.08 and 12A excise charge of 73.66. VAT came to 231.15. So no not 8%?

Also - try and see if you can find mates, or folks on here to order with at the same time. A good few of us on here, agree an order, one person places it and we pay them. That way even if you only want 1 bottle, you get the lower shipping if there are 4 or 5 of you.
