I do have an escape route, I have a European passport.
This may sound unintuitive to you, but I would be more inclined to STAY if I had a European passport. It's largely because I don't have one that I want to leave. Why? Because if I had that 'easy' escape route, and things hit the fan here, I could basically just get on a plane and leave (it's almost that simple for me, due to my lifestyle and career choice). Because I don't, if things hit the fan here, and then I only STARTED the process of emigration, it would take typically another year before I could get out (probably more if there is chaos, as bureaucratic processes break down ... and also I'd be suddenly competing with hoards of desperate people trying to get out ... it's easier to get out when you're just a 'skilled migrant' than when you're one of millions of refugees). I just CANNOT afford to get 'stuck here' in chaos, should it erupt (particularly for other personal reasons I can't mention here, as well as financial).
I don't have an escape route. And the only way to make one, is spending five or more years in another country earning a passport there. If I stay I have no chance at all. The "political risk" element is a LOT scarier when you know that there is a 100% chance you will just be STUCK in whatever happens should it happen.
Just be wary of judging people who choose to leave or stay, not everyone has the same situation. There is a constrained hint of judgment in your tone.
